Moving around in Messages

I have a really long message chain. I want to jump to the first message. I've tried all combinations of ctrl-up arrow , dragging my cursor up the scroll, up arrows for an hour. How can I get to the first message easily, please?

This is Chrome (up-to-date) on MacBook Air.

ADDED: what happens is if I let go or move AT ALL, it immediately jumps to the last (most current) message and I have to start all over. It drives me insane!

ADDED AGAIN: Or can I somehow SELECT ALL so I can paste it into a regular text editor

Thank you so much for helping! I've tried that. If I use wiggle my finger at all, slightly move off the scroll or let go, it jumps down to bottom again. I've tried (using scroll pad), repeatedly scrolling/releasing upward. But it at random decides I've gone too far up and just returns to the bottom again.

oh good grief. never mind. it works today. I swear the cyber Gods love to mess with us!!
