often this is simply due to a vacation, or a suden lack of internet access

paused means they have vacation. When you are a member, it automatically sets you to vacation when your time is low.
I'm pretty sure members don't have infinite vacation time.

Members don't have unlimited vacation time. Also, all members can go on vacation, even basic. The main difference is that basic members have to set theirs manually, when it isn't their move and premium gets automatic timeout protection also.

You can see how much vacation time a player has left via the game page on the website. It is at the bottom of the game on v2 and in the game info tab on v3.
They can be on vacation as long as they have any available.
How does a non-member go on vacation pls ? Oh and for interest, one of my opponents has been away for over a month
