Why in my last game, I win 16 points and my opponent only loose 12? could somebody explain me that?

The ratings are based on a complicated formula that would be too hard to fully explain in a forum post (try a statistics class) but basically, the rating increases or decreases based on the chance this formula thinks each player has of winning. In other words, if you played someone who was very good and the formula predicted to easily beat you, you would gain a lot of points and the other player would lose a lot, but neither amount would be equal because the formula takes into account each players' statistics independently.
