I guess you've found your way to Live Chess games by now.

There are also slower-paced, Online Chess games. These can be accessed from PLAY -> Online Chess.

That would depned on which type of rated game you would like, if you would like to play 'live chess' then you log in, and select 'live chess' from the play section in the top left hand corner, then click on the big live chess link, a pop-upp should be opened. Then, select which type of game you would like, and submit your challenge, an opponent will be found automaticaly for you, and then play away. In Online chess or 'correspondance chess' you can challlenge a player, your friends on the site, or join a tournament if you have played sufficient games of that format. go to play and online chess.

In Live chess, to get a rated game, you can go on the settings link in the top right, which will enable you too change pieces and your communication settings etc, the game type settings will enable you to select a game length and type of your choice, (NOTE: this only affects the games you create, and not those that you select from the graph), as I have just mentioned, you can also select games that have already been created from the graph, each game is represented with a green circle, if the game is un-rated, the green circle will have a white one inside and say something like, lordQuack 30 0 u (for example) those games are unrated, anything else is rated. The higher up on the graph the green circle, the higher rated the player, the further to the right of the graph, the longer the game.

That should cover just about everything you need to know about games of live chess and online chess

They don't call you L'Quick for nothing! As you will have noted, I didn't attempt to describe Live Chess (since I don't use it) - so your explanation still occupies pride of place. Wink

I described how to start rated games in Online Chess - since the OP didn't indicate whether he was interested in Live or Online.

of course, I apologise for my rudeness, although it has taken 4 months to make.
