side by side pawn bug

Perhaps I am ignorant of the rules of chess but I have had the following happen twice:

My and my opponent’s pawn are side by side and they are able to move diagonally behind my pawn and this results in my pawn being taken even though they never land on my square. Is this a bug or a rule of chess?

I just happened in the third move of the last game of the 10|0 rapid arena game I played.

Looks like I am ignorant, this is apparently what is called an en passant capture and can only be done pawn to pawn. Wikipedia to the rescue.
