The new phantom mute is not the answer to spam on the forums.

The ‘Phantom mute’ has been going around and being heavily talked about throughout OTF and across the social side of the site.

What is it? The phantom mute is something that chess.com very recently implemented to control spam on forums, and make sure that users couldn’t post too much in a short time span. On the app, you’ll see a message that says, “Oops. Couldn’t authenticate with the server”, like how it would if you were blocked. On the website, it says, “You have reached the max number of comments you can make at this time. Please try again later.” at the top of the screen.

The problem is that this phantom mute is affecting active users like me more than spammers. You can only post a few times before you have like, a 20-minute cooldown for posting. And when there are twenty active threads on the first page (including OTFDAN), you have to be extremely selective of how you post. The people being struck down by this mute aren’t spammers; they’re just active members of the community who like to post on many topics. I’m all for preventing spam on the forums, but the measures taken are good enough. Muting active members for posting actively and helping chess.com out isn’t the answer. I’m not sure who had the brilliant idea of muting members after posting 5 times, but it’s frustrating to be mid-conversation with people and have to leave because you’re temporarily muted.

The solution: If the site wants to see less spam on its forums, then moderators can keep a small eye on the forums and mute spammers as usual. Also, reporting posts that are unnecessary is a thing that all members of the community should do. People should be free to post as much as they want, and active posters are the ones who make the forums fun. I’m tired of being muted for at least 15 minutes because I have posted 6-7 times in a few minutes.

So, chess.com should remove the phantom mute. It’s a dumb way to prevent spam that disallows active users like myself to post. I hope that the developers choose to change their minds about this idea soon.

I totally agree! The phantom mute isn’t really needed, because most spam posts get dealt with pretty quickly.

I'm pretty sure phantom mutes have existed for quite some years now...

Agentnoggin

I also thought it's a bug!

The phantom mute feature is ridiculous! This is just killing the forums, we don't have a problem with spammers, because moderators are doing a great job!

gracie_beans

Bonkers!

Only if you post 5 or more times in a row. Phantom mutes have not existed to this extent for the two years that I've been on this site.

I'm also unsure why Martin thumbs upped this post of yours. Maybe the moderators don't even know what's going on with this new feature chess.com has implemented.

BasixWhiteBoy

And yes, Martin believes that this isn't a bug and is being used to prevent spammers from posting too much. He said so in this forum.

It's annoying since you have to pick and choose what threads you can post on. Your friend's thread, that discussion in OTFDAN, or the new thread that looks fun?

If we had a fixed timeframe and a specific number of comments you can post in that timeframe, that wouldn't make it so bad, in my opinion. I've found myself questioning whether to start a discussion or not because I might randomly not be able to post in the middle of it. I don't feel like spamming is a huge issue, but it definitely happens.

I'm glad that DMs weren't affected, but it's still frustrating having to be so selective.

Also, where did you find out that it was put into the coding? Is there an article somewhere or did you learn it from a staff member or moderator? Just curious because I think you mentioned that in DAN this morning.

CarTheSlay

wait- never mind, #11 might have just answered my question

edit: It did.

TheCatLoversWillRise

oh alright

rufusmod

I expect that chess.com staff will make an announcement about phantom muting comment throttling, or will authorize moderators to do so.

chess.com is also consistently fine-tuning these algorithms.

I remember before this phantom mute thingy, there was this system where if you posted 5 messages in a row you will have to wait for someone else to post something. The only problem is that mobile users were invincible to that. It feels way better to wait for someone to post another message just so you can write those 5 messages again. Not only there wasn’t a cooldown on this and just rely on the users, but it was also impossible for us to write 5 messages in a row (as a lot of the time we are in OTFDAN or a person above you thread). Meaning that not only we didn’t spam, but we could have chat non stop.

I hope chess.com realises this mistake and either add this old system again or make a better one that doesn’t annoy us.

BasixWhiteBoy

The 5 messages in a row thing isn't bad at all, since that is spam. Posting the same number of messages in conversations with actual conversations shouldn't get you muted for 20 minutes or more. That's just dumb.

Exactly, it’s way better to get the 5 messages in a row system.

Where'd you get your information?

Where'd you get your information?

From the same 10000 posts that you've seen regarding this issue. When you get auto muted for 'posting too much', that's all the information you need.

Unless you're asking something else.
