Time cheating?

One day the world will surely have a consistent lag less than 0.2s, like many places now.

Lately i played against an indian dude. I had queen against rook in the end, 15 seconds on the clock. My opponent went down to 2 seconds so i guessed he wanted to let the time run out.. but then his time snipped up to 10 second while mine was suddenly down to zero - i lost !!!??!!!

Please don´t talk about time lag or anything else - my internet connection is very fast..i checked other web sites, they went well - so how could this be explained?

Usual suspect is an antivirus program on your end.  Even a momentary disconnection can screw up the clocks.  Maybe browser based wasn't the best design but it's what we've got and it wants all your memory.  It's why everyone tells you to clear your cache.  Chess.com wants everything.  I'm just the messenger. Laughing V3 might help with this.

That oughta help everyone's great-great-grandkids . . . Cool

EmbarassedI've certainly done my share of V3 bashing, but the tactics trainer looks and feels done and there are only a few missing sections, like Chess Mentor (Lessons).  So maybe not so far away.  And then again I'm often wrong.Embarassed Laughing

While your opponent's clock is ticking down, it may be misleading, I believe, because it informs you of time passed at your end. Lag may mean the opponent has either not seen your move, or may have played his move and you not received it yet.

I presume the time becomes perfectly reliable when your clock starts running (at this point you have received the move, and the server has all of the information it needs about how much time the opponent spent thinking).

I have been suffering the same problemas the whole day. I lost nearly ten games for this reason. My connection is great and has no lag, it's either their servers or that they are imposing their so called lag to non-premium users

I don't care what people say. Time lag, aliens or whatever. I just had a game and opponent had 4:58 on the clock and I had 8 seconds. We both played at appr. equal speeds. Nobody can tell me this is normal. I beat him with 7 seconds to spare and commented "Sorry but your time trick did not work".

No comment from him, her or it.

I have to say I am a lousy bullet player, largely because I forget the clock.

However the size of the clock on here is ridiculously small and does not flash when you are in the last ten seconds.

Well those are my excuses and I am sticking to them.

There definitely are issues with time cheating. As avocadojones says lag doesn't explain it. Some people know how to take advantage of the system somehow. Apparently chess.com can't do anything about it, as this dicussion has gone on forever.

A toggle switch that interrupts one's internet for a second or two will imitate lag without causing a disconnection. In a short blitz or bullet game, it can make the difference between otherwise equal players.

(An administrator on another site explained this method to me several years ago.)

On chess.com, premoves can mimic lag. It was worse a few years ago. I had a lot of bullet games stop completely for 5-10 seconds repeatedly because my opponent and I were both using premove.

jtorres336

that full of &*^%^%^ it.

i was playing 15 minutes bliss i had plenty of time about 6 minutes

then i was watching my opponent clock it when down to 20 seconds .i remind him of the clock,.it was changing rapidly to 19,18,17,and so on.when i advise him.

the clock change to 36 seconds i keep moving trying to understand what i saw.

then the clock change to 1:26.i was shock.then keep checking until he mates.

i accepted his rematch and when i ask him how he change the clock because i wanted to know how..he just resign with out a word.i think i was bugged.here the conversation.

i respected alot to chess.com but now i have my dough.

The times are logged and can be seen on the v3 of the site.

The times shown in your client may or may not be correct. After your move, your client will show your opponent's time going down. When you receive the opponent's move, the move comes from the server but it also includes the time your opponent took to make the move,  which includes any lag calculations. If they took less time than your local client shows, their clock on your side changes.

The server holds the official clock and any time changes your client receieves are due to the server's caculations.

same issue i m losing 70% of games due to lags even against geogrohically close opponents. it s getting worse and worse. on 3 min game feel like playing one min. i guess payable version is better....

Geographically close to you, is probably a worse case scenario unless the site has some kind of geographically distributed servers where they can place your game on a closer server.

You move has to go from your machine, out your network, through your ISP all the way to the chess.com servers in the US. The server receives your move, updates the timing and sends the move to your opponent. If they are near you, geographically, it will likely traverse a very similar path.

The upside in such a situation is your lag and your opponent's should be similar and not really impact the game, assuming no problems on your machines that cause additional lag.

But a lot of lag is actually caused by local processes and not by the trip to the chess.com servers.
