Resolved: Time?

How come while playing 15/10 chess live a players time will increase on me? Or in one instance it went to over 16 minutes after 12 minutes of play? seems very unfair.

The number after the slash is the time increment.  Every time a player makes a move, that many seconds get added back onto his clock.  In your case the time increment is 10 seconds, so if a player moves faster than 10 seconds, he's actually increasing the amount of time left on his clock with every move.

If you don't want that, choose either a time increment of zero, or at least a smaller value.

Thanks.  Now I can play without at least one arm tied behind by back.

Seems you are unaware time was added to your clock as well.

Yes, I should have mentioned that-- 10 seconds is added back on after every move regardless of how long one takes to make the move.  So if you make all your moves in less than 10 seconds your remaining clock time will actually increase as the game proceeds.  If you take exactly 15 seconds to make every move, your remaining clock time is actually decreasing only 5 seconds per move.

All of this assumes a 10 second increment, as you specified above.  If you had only a 2 second increment in a 15 minute game, probably almost all moves except at the very beginning or end (or obvious exchanges) would take longer than the increment, and both players' clocks would show decreasing time.

I haven't played much live on chess.com, but I only play longer games with 0 increment.  The increment becomes more important with short games, and is a real game changer in very short games.
