There is a bug in the counter on the group forums summary page that resets the count to zero if a member is ever removed -- perhaps this is related.
Incidentally, I've noticed that bugs that have long since been resolved on the main forums often persist in the group forums. Presumably, this is an indication that the forum code was split out and duplicated for the group forums and that fixes have to be explicitly ported over to that version as well.

I agree -- generally speaking, splitting source code always becomes a support nightmare and if absolutely unavoidable, the sooner the two branches can be recombined the better.

Incidentally, there is a similar bug in the main forums, where the removal of a user (and their comments) causes all of the posts within the topic itself to be renumbered, but never removed from the comment count on the summary page.
It looks like the fix for the bug I described above has a bug of its own....
