Why do disconnects result in resignation?

Ok, maybe this has already been addressed and I'm just out of the loop, but I've noticed this when I review my LiveChess games.  For whatever reason, my connection to LiveChess is weak some days and this sometimes results in losing connection during a game. Now it used to be that when someone's connection was dropped during a game, they forfeit and the game result would read something like "(Opponent) won. Game abandoned."

Lately, I've noticed that all my disconnect losses read "....won by resignation."  Is anyone else experiencing this?  Not that it's a big deal - a loss is a loss, after all. However, when anyone reviews a game, they now have to figure out why one side would have resigned while being up a piece and heading for a winning endgame position...more on a nuisance than anything else, I suppose. Any thoughts?

I also have the same problem, but I think if you would draw the game if you disconnect many people would just pull out the cable if they are loosing to save points.

I'm not suggesting that people shouldn't get losses for disconnection, as that would most definitely be abused. I'm only saying that a loss due to disconnection should be reflected correctly on the game summary.

i.e. "(opponent) won - game abandoned." as opposed to "(opponent) won by resignation."

As an example, you can refer to my recent LiveChess game against nicolauss.

I got disconnect on the 15th move and lost as a result. But the result reads "nicolauss won by resignation". I was up a piece and and my position was clearly better, so I would have no reason to resign at that point. My question is: why do some disconnected games show the "game abandoned" result while others indicate that the losing player (who was disconnected) resigned?

yep. just another bug that needs to be fixed...

Thanks Erik - that's what I needed to know. You and your staff are doing a great job with the site, btw. Keep up the good work! Smile

i have lost minimum 10 games because of connection. And it made me feel very upset, like someone knows the trick to pull on u when u are winning, i don't know if it is possible, is it?

the_big_j_77

@zetmarina

I don't think so... As Erik suggested, there are still bugs with LiveChess that need to be worked out. It's a work in progress. Some of these bugs may cause unexpcected disconnections or just poor connectivity in general. Disconnect losses happen to all of us at one point or another...

Perhaps it could be programmed so that, in the event of a disconnection, a person has, say, 3 minutes to reconnect? Failure to have reconnected in this time can then result in a 'game forfeited' being recorded. To prevent abuse, this could be limited to only 1 reconnect per game and only permitted in games where a player has more than 3 minutes left on the clock. Any thoughts, anyone?

I get what you're saying but 'Won by disconnection' sounds...er...

Anyway, what would you put to make it sound formal? Won by disconnection, or what?

I would suggest that the result of the game read exactly as it does now (when the system works as it should, that is). Currently, when a player disconnects, resulting in forfeiture of the match, the result reads:

[opponent] won - game abandoned

[opponent] being the username of the winning player. Of course, as I noted in my earlier post, it does not always read out this way in the game summary.

The_Cobra

"You play Live Chess at your own risk" - that's what the board says.

I've never been able to successfully reconnect after disconnecting.  Even when I get back in quickly, when the game had plenty of time, I do not continue the abandoned game.  It would be nice if the opponent could choose to give you more time to reconnect (I've played with friends and I don't want to punish them for accidental disconnects).

MUCH better than yahoo though, so I can't complain.

@ The_Cobra:

The complaint was never about the number of disconnections, just that when you lose due to disconnection, it does not always reflect that accurately in the game summary on your page...

I don't even know that I've been disconnected.  It looks to me like my opponent is just taking a long time to move, but when I look at my game archive, the game's already over and says I abandoned and lost.

If i my connection resume before my timer finishes I should lose the game sue to disconnect, why this is happening !? This is a bug in my view and to be fixed.

the other day I was playing over 5G and someone called me during game, for some reason I got disconnected from the net momentarily maybe 30 seconds but I did have enough time on my clock however I lost the game…
