Withdraw Draw Offer?

Avatar of tewald

I'd forgotten that once I'd made a move in the Online Chess section I was automatically sent to the next game. This is an option that I normally enjoy. However, I'd meant to send a draw offer to the player of the game I'd just submitted a move for, and accidentally sent it to the next game - a game I should win. Is there a way to withdraw a draw offer? Thanks.

No.

"the [draw] offer cannot be withdrawn and remains valid until the opponent accepts it, rejects it orally, rejects it by touching a piece with the intention of moving or capturing it, or the game is concluded in some other way."

Article 9.1b FIDE Laws of Chess

OTOH, this is not FIDE, and it was a computer operation error by me, not really a chess error. Of course, that can't be determined by the program.

OK. Thanks. Thought it was worth asking. Fortunately, my opponent was very considerate and turned it down as I asked him to when I explained my error. I understand he was under no obligation to do so.

Misery loves company - just did the same thing from a likely won position.  In chat I said it was a mistake, but if there's one bad thing about playing internationally, it may be not everyone speaks the same language.

It's only a game, right?

Pertaining to a draw offer, I se the above comment "...rejects it by touching a piece with the intention of moving or capturing it..'

So if you offer a draw, can the opponent keep playing and the draw offer stands, and he can click accept later if he blunders?

Or if he keeps playing, once he moves the draw offer is automatically rescinded?

Sorry, just unclear on that.

Thanks!

As far as I'm aware, the draw offer is indeed rescinded automatically once a move is made by the opponent. So you're not bound to your offer forever.

I am so desperate. Exactly the same thing happened to me.... In a clearly winning game. I think @chess.com has to do something about it. at least for 1 min to be able to withdraw draw offer.

No. Please don't. We want this to be as much like real games as possible. Accidents and bad luck happen, people should take responsibility for what they do.

Best to submit the offer instead of making a move-or wait until your oppnonent has made one-

Withdrawing an offer is not allowed, it is like afterall taking back a move isn't it?

Chess is about paying attention. Watch what you're doing. Start playing your games out if you're not capable of offering draws without all the drama.

I have lost many half-points from aciddently touching the "offer draw button"

What I don't understand is why you can still offer a draw when you access a game from the side of your opponent. If you click on your oppoenent's profile and then you go to your game you can offer a draw from your opponent's side and it will still count as an ordinary draw offer.

There is no going into the other side. When you visit a game you're a participant in, all the options there are yours. So, doing what you say and clicking resign is a resignation. Same for a draw.

What I would advocate for is a confirm button that asks you whether you want to confirm the draw offer or not. Just another slight implementation to reduce the chance of a "wrongfully sent" draw.

You can get this in settings, i believe.

At least, when i click on "offer/claim draw", i get a confirmation request.

Yes, there is a confirmation button -- but it sits in the same place as the draw offer button.

So a double touch on a tablet can easily lead to an draw. Same with resign.

Chess.com's user interface would be more user friendly if

  1. the draw and resign buttons would not be so close to the arrow buttons,
  2. the confirmation button for a draw/resign would be located in another screen area and
  3. there would be no draw/resign option while being in analysis mode.

I sent a request to chess.com support. They seem to think about it.

What you ask for exists. Check your account settings: You can enable the confirmation button.
