1 minute games and checkers

Gday all, I have recently started playing one minute live chess games.

I am not a very good chess player and my playing name makes that completely clear. I just love the game.

Things became a whole lot quicker my end, once I had discovered premoves.

My concept of one minute chess is to play the best move possible whilst keeping an eye on the time. Some moves are aggressive and structured, some moves are developmental and some moves are to save time. That, I thought, was the whole purpose of playing such a quick game: time managment is as important as skill.

Lately though, when I win games against higher ranking opponents on time, they get down right abussive and accuse me of playing checkers.

Is it fair to play safe, time saving moves against a stronger opponent when time is on your side?

Are one minute games a chance to compete against much better players because speed is an important aspect of the game as well as skill?

Should higher ranking players that get beaten on time just cop it sweet and say gg (as most do) or should the occasional abussive twats just play longer games and stop being such sore losers?

I thought winning on time was the whole point of quick games.

Thoughts please.

Yes it is fair , don't listen to them (of course in OTB chess you might find yourself with more difficulty without premoves) winning on time is one of the biggest factors of one minute chess and if the internet where one minute chess is most common allows premoves then use them them to your full advantage. They should say gg and if they are not up for losing on time do to your smart use of premoves then they should move up to 3+ minute chess.

Ignore the sore losers . . . If you win on time it's a WIN. The better players on the bullet side (for the most part) say "gg" and leave it at that. They have also won their fair share of games on time so they understand if they lose on time as well. Checkers has nothing to do with it ;-)

Winning on time is not "the whole point of quick games". The point is playing well with short time. Okay, I can understand if someone plays to win on time when both sides are down to a few seconds on the clock, but I don't have much respect for the people who don't even try to win on the board and just play to win on time from move 1.

Btw, it's nothing personal, a lot of people play to win on time in quick games, but since you asked for opinions...

i hate winning and losing on time, and i almost only play bullet now.  It just doesnt feel like a real win for me.  The whole point is to checkmate the other persons king imo, making moves to win on time doesnt get you any better at chess.  It is frustrating to lose on time when youve dominated someone so bad because they just push instead of think, i think about telling them off but i never do simply becuase i have won on time.  Instead, just play a few more games with pushers to mate them before the clock runs out.

Bullet chess is very different from regular chess. Because of the time constraint there are strategies that specifically work in 1+0 games.

For instance, as far as opennings go, I prefer to play systems, like the English, rather than openings where there is more theory. This means I can play faster and at the same time have a clear plan. I also try to play moves that complicate the game in order to get my opponent to think, if I have a time advantage. These are just examples.

What I mean is that the fact that there is so little time is crucial to bullet games. Time is almost as important as the position on the board. It makes no sense to criticize someone because they won exclusivly on time since it is 100% part of the game. To be able to mate in less than one minute someone who is just playing for a time win is a very important skill in bullet.

Time players can get our nerves, but if we are not prepared to play them and keep a cool head it is better to drop bullet chess altogether, IMHO.

Gotta admit, its a good feeling to get a mate in 1 0 bullet against a quality oponent... even better if you can do it with time to spare :_)

On a side not... If I beat an oponent on time by more than, say, 5 to 10 secs - then I'm comfortable with that... it means you've put enough pressure on them to gain a significant time advantage.

The least satisfying, consequently the most frustrating when you lose, is when the loser has a peice advantage and loses on time by a few milliseconds... usually the loser is copping a time penatly for having to think about a move to mate.. whereas the winner is just running like crazy (usually with premoves, but thats a whole other argument :)  Its times like these you need to be careful you don't put your mouse through your monitor...hehe

I concur

a monkey can play for a win on time but it applies to both players; the smarter monkey will most of the time.  I love winning on time; sometimes in 1 min blitz I have over 20 seconds left and win on time against 1800 + players - i feel it's a question of knowing about the forced exchanges and quickly understanding positions.

Running around the board in a dead position (i.e, K+R vs. K+R) isn't a question of quickly understanding positions.

I concur, good point

I'd take that as a compliment; the typical bullet game is seldom at the level of tic-tac-toe.
