That's ridiculous! If people want to swear.... let them! It's a way of expressing yourself! This might be a "family" site, but most of the players seem to be guys that dont give a monkies about a few cuss words.

I respect the fact that there might be little kids, old ladies and whoever else (if there is anyone else) that don't want to hear anything rude but can't there be a parental lock feature of sorts? Just a little tick box that allows cuss words? As adults the choice should be up to us.

Why the need to say "I F*****" up...instead of "I messed up" or simply i played the wrong move?  if you and others have an uncontrollable desire to cuss then by all means start your own chess website and let the disclamer note that there is going to be cussing.  I will support your right to do that.  But here at chess.com there are rules that you agreed to.  If you dont like and or agree to the rules then why did you agree to them?

Its not that hard to form a complete sentence that doesnt include cuss words.  And again...there are children and women here.  At the very least please respect that, and dont be so concerned looking "weak" or "uncool"

To be fair, some people are not native English speakers and so have no way of telling which words we consider usable in everyday conversation.

Those whose first language is English, however, have no excuse.

I apologize for not being clear on my post.  But i was talking about the ones that should know better.

OH CHOCLATE CAKE!  THIS IS SMURFING RIDICULOUS!  i cant understand why anyone would take offence to things like four letter words.  are the words crap, poop, dung, or turd offensive?  (if they are please dont ban me just delete my comment and issue me a warning--or post a list of "offensive" words for me...;)  they're all four letter words that denote the same thing as the "S" word.  the language issue also interests me, do you have filters for curse words in German, French, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, Norwegian, Romanian, Arabic, Blackfoot Indian, etc etc etc etc or Swahili?  what about words not normally used as curse words but substituted for four letter words to get around the filter?  such as saying "go duck yourself!" that is just as offensive as using the "F" word instead of duck isn't it?  ubiquitous banning of four letter words seems totalitarian in nature.  i like the idea of being able to choose whether or not you can censor other peoples language.  i love cursing, and im a highly educated professional psychological therapist!  i understand this is a family website, but wouldn't an optional filter satisfy everyone?  if parents dont want their children to see curse words they can select the "no cursing" option and set a password protection, the same option would be available to grown-ups who dont use "offensive" words.  (im just being the devils advocate here...oh no is devil considered offensive to atheists, or ultra-christians?)

Maybe you could click on words and they don't show up with your personal  filter? *click* could get rid of every variation of curses in time...

This is all about freedom of speech and censoring.
To all that support freedom of swearing: alright you get to express yourself fully, but don't you see the disadvantages to other people? Maybe you don't care, or you don't see yourself offending other people. Even if it is 1/30 chance of those swear words actually hurting people (they rarely do abuse people i think... unless its direct like "**** you"), thats a lot of people hurt.

has a child/adolescent commented on this forum post yet?

Interesting debate. It would be really cool if the software were able to adjust the word list filter based on the age of the players in a one on one chat situation.

Avatar of Loweryder

The only problem with having an optional filter is the fact that few people would use it, notably the children and women (why women???) in question. I don't think many 12 year olds would bother or even want to block swearing, and their parents would probably not consider swearing on chess.com as big an issue to their child's innocence as other places on the Internet... Maybe I'm wrong though

I was thinking more along the lines of the software auto-detecting the age of the players via their profile? or some other means and then setting the appropriate level, not for the user to choose.

Some would say that the langauge monitoring "sucks", and I can tell you that when I was a kid, in the 60's and 70's, "sucks' was considered a really dirty word because of it's sexual connotation.  That has really changed.  Now people say "sucked, sucks" all the time and no one thinks it's a big deal.  It still makes me wince a little bit at the age of 48.  But, the language really does evolve.  A few hundred years ago "****" meant "to hit" or "strike".  Not any more.

i was once said to my opponent, "this looks like a mate in xxx (moves)" but the x is too much and got a warning.

I just love people who bring up the "Freedom of Speech" issue here. Chess.com is  a club that you joined with certain rules. You either abide by the rules or you leave & find a site that will allow you to use all the words you want. It doesn't make sense anyway, let's say you made a bad move, & you curse at that moment at home in front of your computer. That's ok but you dont have to type it out. C'mon people, use only language you would use in front of your grandparents or your priest. It's not hard to do. If you are smart enough to play chess, you are smart enough not to type bad words.

Avatar of asampedas

Come to think of it, I wonder who came up with these bad words or vulgarities. It has now spread into the teenagers community, for in my school, I'll always hear someone swear. One would wonder how they got influenced, but I am truly devastated.

Swearing is a sin...Don't you treasure your soul?

Avatar of sstb

Oh yes I do... reminds me of a joke.

In my metaphysics exam, I cheated by looking into the invigilator's soul...

Lame joke. Anyway swearing is... lol maybe not since the ToS says not to talk of offensive stuff. (Is my post offensive?)

Avatar of RetGuvvie98

Spot on, Erik.   It is your site.

Typing their gratuitous offensive language is just some folks deliberate way of getting attention.

sad, but true.

Also, there are a number of posts here, about the youngest children being 12 or older -   News Flash:  FACT:  there are a lot of younger ones here, usually with a parent in attendance, but that doesn't seem to have any effect on some user's desire to get attention by offensive language.

When a bad word comes out just publish a little disclaimer insert in its place.

"You play like ***Attention! It appears that you have placed your opponent in such Chess related stress that they have freaked and suffered total loss of impulse control, resulting in a short psychotic episode during which explicitly uncomplimentary language has been used. Please do not subject your opponents to such merciless thrashing in the future!*** . And everyone is happy Laughing

Even non native speakers know all the swearwords!

Personally, I'm glad that Erik is rather strict.  I've belonged to other sites (not necessarily chess sites) that were lax in their language policies.  The profanity didn't bother me, but personal attacks against members became more common than actual contributions to site content.  It really just became an ugly place to hang out.  A lot of the best members gave up and left.  I'd hate to see chess.com turn into such a site.
