I believe that an average club rating is between 1400-1800.

What are you all blabbering about, the OP asked a straightforward question which is easy to answer, download the full fide ranking list and with some easy excel work you'll have the average rating per age category in 5 minutes.

#68. I think that as well.

Personally I have not played for thirty years and I am getting my arse kicked playing Blitz by Arena SOS 5.1 which google tells me is 2560.

I found quite cute and suggested I was 1560. ( Quick and painless wild guess! )
I know I no longer have the mental discipline to play.

I got 1000 for my elo. There anybody who can teach me, especially how to play black?  Don't know what to do after qgd tmb.  I only win as black when whites first move is king pawn forward two for first move. Using sicilian dragon yugoslav. It's easy to beat anybody with white, and playing queen pawn forward two for first move. I wanna get good with black.

I played a bit during middle and high school. Was pretty decent. Now, I picked it back up a few weeks ago and seem to be stuck around 1200 and feeling like I must really suck or 1200 isn't too bad lol.

I have just cracked 1500 on my blitz games (10 minutes).  I feel pretty happy considering I've been playing chess constantly since 2011.  I've met players rated 1200 who played like GMs and people 1600 rated that played like noobs.  Rating is not much of an indication of how good someone can be.

I have a friend here in Chess.com who has increased his rating from 1373 to 2153 in 4 months. How is that possible?

blueemu

Because he only joined four months ago, and chose 1200 as his starting rating, when his true playing strength was hundreds of points higher.

I gained nearly 1000 points in my first few months, too. For exactly the same reason.

Biguncho

Ok got it. Thanks

Technically if they blunder it doesn't matter what their score is, a trap is a trap is a trap - look out Magnus Carlson 🤣.. I don't think aiming to be grandmaster is worth it, I think aim to master yourself beyond your own expectations is a better approach.Prove yourself to yourself, who cares what others think.

It depends on the sample as to what you believe is average.  If you put a board down in the street and random people sat down to play you, a rating of 1300 would win you pretty much every game.  Obviously if the sample is seasoned tournament chess players you would need to be considerably better to win. I found when I started on here, 2 years ago, that I couldn't beat 1000 rated players, you miss the most basic of lines and just aren't able to calculate the patterns, and never really knew what I was trying to do.  My goal then was to get my ratings up above 1000.  Now I am in the upper quartile on all ratings distributions and I think 16/1700 is possible. It was all about experience and understanding the game for me, think to get above 2000 a certain amount of studying and dedication is required.  I still only know a couple of e4/d4 openings and even then only for 3 or 4 moves.

Congrats on achieving your goal, I see you have reached 1600 blitz rating. Indeed, most people are rated below 1000 when they start playing chess. Before I started playing chess, chess looked easy, I thought I would immediately be around 13-1400. 1600 gameplay looks simple and easy (it is simple and easy from the point of view of titled players) but it actually takes playing thousands of games in order to get there.

I am 1700 rated blitz player and the quality of my games varies drastically. However, even if I am tired or angry or if it is not my day for chess I could still beat 1200s consistently. They simply make easy to spot and exploit blunders a lot more often then 1600 or 1700 rated players. Plus, 1600 and 1700 players are way more dangerous when it comes to generating an attack. Sure, 1200 player may spot a tactic but it is a lot less likely that he will reach the position where he has a blow out, knockout tactic in the first place.

I am 78 y.o. , currently 1430...well below my personal best from 4 years ago. Is this due to age?

Possibly.

I'm approaching 70, and 2351 is my peak rating. It appears that my brain hasn't turned into porridge yet. Soon, perhaps.
