Yeah most of us hate these little changes to the rules of chess that they have implemented.  Unfortunately, if you are going to play here you need to be aware of them.  Here's the article..

Sometimes you need to spend half your time on one move!

I am new to chess.com. I think I will avoid quick play games.

I agree with you FangBo - it's just a ridiculous rule.

The 50% of your time for one move is only until move 10.

yeah I agree, even though you almost always lose when you use 30 seconds on a move in a 1 minute game, you should be able to use 30 seconds. it's just a bullet game and waiting 20 seconds more or less does not make a difference for the person waiting happy.png

in a 30 minutes game it's different since waiting 15 minutes for nothing is pretty long....maybe in those games they should make a button you have to hit every 5 minutes of thinking on a move

That's a good idea in any case.

Does that make it okay? Some openings are complicated like the Winawer French and you simply need to spend that time.

Exactly...It may be a losing strategy, but that shouldn't mean you can't play it! That's comparable to punishing people for playing bad moves on the board.

When the games are important, like in a tournament you don't get this issue, because both players are desperate to win, and shoukd the other person abandon the game the other person gets compensation in the form of an easy full point and a rest before the next round. The one exceprion that comes to mind is Stein itz against von Bardaleben Hastings roughly 1896, when the latter left the board never to return without resigning. But at least in such situations they'll have the humiliation of having to come back the next day and everyone will give them a dissaproving gaze and tut!

Your suggestion is not a bad one, although pressing a button every 5 minutes is mildly distracting it is a step in the right direction...

It doesn't. I'd say that for bullet 30sec shouldn't abandon at all. It's a 1 min game, why the heck is it there in the first place. I agree it shouldn't be.

Having it only scale with half the time of the game doesn't make sense, 30 seconds for a human isn't very long to think on one critical move and I can see it happening so it's just a bad rule, in my opinion.

This is posted on the chess.com support, but I think we should be able to spend more time in a critical move
