You would have said, "Good grief!" to someone who just lost in a game of chess to you.

Think about it.

Atos

Hypothetically, there is a possibility that someone writes "good game" and actually means it. But by then it will be diluted.

Yes, people say "thank you" and don't mean it. In other words, they lie.

gg is only to letters. All meaning is inferred by the reader. Now stop being a baby and pick you cyber pieces up off the floor.

Exactly! Now ...

It amazes me how many people over think "gg"  Its nothing more then a kind gesture of politeness.

Says you.

Says a large majority of chess players.  If you or others chose to over think its meaning then thats on you.  Just take it for what it is.

Hey, I agree with ya. My comment (along with the winking emoticon) was due to the fact that this thread has now run for 20 pages. Amazing.

I think we need to consider others and use an internationally agreed term of communication that clearly acknowledges appreciation for the game that was just won or lost, and I think we would all agree,  (as members of an international global community living in peace and with a common interest that binds us) that the term we all use the most and captures the moment is ...

The idea that 'gg' is rude is only an idea that those who are misunderstood have.  'Good game', doesn't necessarily mean that you think the game was a 'close' or an overly 'competitive' encounter, and by saying 'gg' doesn't intend sarcasm in most cases, it simply means that you think it was good that you had a game.  If you take things literally then it becomes ridiculous, how many people who say 'lol' actually did 'laugh out loud'?  If someone really wants to be disrespectful after a game then they could say a lot worse than 'gg'.

I'd say to the OP to grow up and learn that not everyone who beats him wants to rub it in.  Perhaps if I beat you then I will say something along the lines of: 'Well I was going to say gg but it wasn't really was it, so I'll just say that you suck and leave it at that!'. Wink

So lets say you are in a tournament with your opponent sitting directly across from you, instead of behind a computer screen and at the start of the match he doesn't say a word to you. Then, he solidly kicks your butt...extends his hand and says "good game". Would you reach out and shake his hand , or would you go on a tirade about how arrogant he is for daring to give you an unwarranted compliment on your bad playing? If anything, saying good game is a sign of modesty to me. Your opponent could tell you.."you suck! you should give up playing chess now if you know whats good for you." instead he chose to just say good game, and leave it at that. Sounds to me like the "arrogance award" goes to the player who refuses to graciously accept when they have been defeated by a better player than he/she.

Since Britain sent convicts to Sarah Island near Strahan in the south of Australia, and we ran out of room to keep them, so we purchased the larger Island to our north (where you'll find Sydney, Melbourne etc...), now also accepted as a part of Australia.

ok im just sayin here, dont mind me at all, but gg means owned. if your gona play me and not even say hello to me or anythin, and you say "gg" after you win, your basicly sayin 'hahahaha noob owned lol'. im just letin y'all know. if its a friends game or whatever obviously say whatever you want but if not, dont say gg to me. im just sayin.  kthxbai :)

The only problem is, i get "gg" even when i have won, so where does your logic fit in with that? I have always seen it as "good game, i enjoyed it". I don't care if they beat me or not unless they are really rude and say, "you suck!" or something to that effect.

its always nice thing to say gg after the game. whether you win or lose you must respect opponent. What is the use of playing sport for not being sport enough.?

Exactly, I see no reason to think bad intentions unless it is totally explicit.
