EP!
What bothers me about it is that people use it all the time regardless of how the game went. I've seen it when i've mated in under 20 moves or been mated early. One game in particular sticks out when i was distracted and made a blunder and resigned a few moves later and offered a rematch, the guy says GG and i say no it wasn't, he literally went off saying if I didn't say GG to him he wouldn't give me a rematch. What is the point of saying it if it's meaningless. If i mate you in 19 moves it wasn't a good game just because you say it was. If you think it's just being polite then I think you're off base. How about something like thanks for taking the time to play me or thanks for the game. To me it's become a joke how many people treat it like a religion to say it regardless if good or bad game. Personally save it for when it really is a good game
As a rule, acknowledge a good game only if it IS a good game. If you really enjoyed playing the game, and it wasnt a stupid game with both parties making numerous blunders, then do not hesitate to type in "gg" irrespective of whether you have won or lost, i.e, if you want to. If the opposition offers his handshake claiming it to be a good game and you disagree, you can either let him know it wasnt, or simply politely ignore if you are that kind of a person.
Bottomline, after my games when I say "gg" and if somebody has a problem with me saying it, and instead of telling me about it, they make a goddam forum topic venting their dissonances, expecting everyone they play to visit the topic and then respect their stand on the issue, then I say we do got a problem. And to settle this problem we can always step out into the alley and sort out our differences there, face-to-face, fist-to-fist.
Good day...creator of this topic, rest of the people who too have an issue, and gentleman.
its better then
"kiss my ass, punk. i owned your f***ing ass. mabye you should take up checkers. you suck. i killed you. your mom and i, we didnt want you to be this bad of a chess player."--smalll64 the biggest douche on chess.com, and yes, i just used a name
I too have noticed that people from Garden Grove tend to be rather imperious.
Always wondered what gg stood for. Now I know Garden Grove.
it actually gets to the point where if someone consistently ends the game with "gg", its actually causing spam in my chat box
Poor baby! 2 characters of spam from each opponent! Actually!
I'd rather see "gg" than "oh you suck so bad at this game what are you six oh you stink you stink." Of course, I have noticed that the players who talk the most BS are often the ones who either won't play a rematch, or upon playing one lose horribly.
in my first day of live chess i dont know also wat is this means but i realize it means good game. and when im playing my opponent chat me "lol" kala ko minumura na ako and i said ba nakamura to a or i thought he damn me but i kept patience and keep playing, but for me before my understantding in "gg is fish or 'galung'gong this wat im saying when im buying fish. the words lol or ulol but this is u lauhgping out loud, and also the hinayopak i thought also this bad but it means tired or its seem so realy tired. if you re'verse it kapoy. or kapoyanih. and also tata it means excite or excited or atat. then the server warn when i try to reply.
I say gg after every game, its just being polite, e ven if you lose horribly, or win greatly. I never mean it in that context.
You never mean gg in the context of just being polite?
Geez, what a jerk.
I LOL @ this thread.
The GG thing started way before I was born and was prevalant in video games.
How odd is it that when this custom comes to the chess fore everyone takes it literally, assumes it to be insulting even though they have no idea what it means and has to try and rationalize the situation.
GG is just a virtual handshake. Nothing more, nothing less. It has nothing to do with peoples' insecurities. Why anyone would be insulted by something they don't understand is beyond me.
Yes. And see post #4

Could NOT have said it any better. Totally agree.
OMG! This is like some kind of nightmare zombie movie, where you think the miserable thread is finally dead, but it comes at you months later when you think everything is OK.
It has to be the stupidest thread of all times...worse than the guy with the sharks & lasers...and really should be stomped into the ground once & for all.
which guy with sharks and lasers?
...and I like zombie threads. they're like old friends that you forgot you didn't really like that much, but when you see them again after a really long time, you forget that you didn't like them, and are happy to see them again...for about 5 minutes.
For the record... when I say gg to everyone except the OP it means, thanks for a good game. If I ever say it to the OP, it means the worst possible arrogance and insult you can imagine!! :P
