25 page dicussion on "gg"... For real?
gg is arrogance

good game is not arrogance. means that the opponent has shown superiority, but he liked the game you did with it

this guy is a freaking sore loser. cursed at me for beating him. called me a cheater. go suck on a led pipe ninga.

I like the old stereotype of the gloved fight. To make a display is to bring folly to the surface. This is sometimes better left unrecognized. For that reason (and I am just now learning that discussion is forbidden in OTB tournaments) I like to believe that a social custom can be strong enough to overcome my weaknesses. I can by the nature of communication choose to get upset later, say good game and nothing more, and leave my opponent to fathom his conscience. And if he truly intends well then forgiveness should shine through; even for whatever supposed foul.
So you can see two men with gloves on and talk real polite and then cut out the small talk, and avoid the confrontation. I wish you well KillaNinja.

Im done tracking this. Bottom line..OP = sore loser. When I have 40-60 or more (and I play on chesskid.com too vs my students)... all I have time to do is just make my moves with gg here and gl there. I can only imagine if I played the OPster and gave my "gg" after a win... and he completely misunderstands and get angery????
Sigh...

Apparently, some people just can't handle losing a game of chess with even a shred of dignity. If you're offended by anyone telling you "good game" after the game of chess, your insecurities are frightening. I don't care if you just lost horribly and the winner WAS the first one to say something.
Either someone is genuinely thanking you for the game, or they're being childish and trying to rub it in. Either way, just move on. Don't attach that much meaning to losing a board game one time. Or do, I suppose. It's funny to read about.

Absolutely 100% lead pipe lock.... nailed it.

Whether I win or lose I always say 'gg'.
I get that it can be interpreted as arrogance but I just think of it as niceties of the game. I don't take it as arrogance from my opponent if they win, but I guess others can. I was always taught to shake hands with my opponent, wish them good luck and then say good game at the end.

this has nothing to do with 'handling a loss'. this is about communication between too people. i find it hard to comprehend how people can not only misunderstand the general topic, but falsly assert presumtions about me. its exactly the kind of neglection your giving someone when you say gg. dont bother to say anything else, and just say good game like you'r some kind of robot. annoyance doesnt come from losing, its from complete arrogance from ppl.
this man is right! wait....
arrogance is assuming people use engines when they act interested in a position.
kthanksbye

I really don't see how its much of an offering of sportsmanship to confer that you enjoyed a contest you won. Sending gg after a loss shows a level of sportsmanship. If you send gg after a win but not after losses, you don't have a mature level of sportsmanship, you just like winning.

I would like to share with you following exchange taken from actual game:
black checkmates white with spectacular combination
white: gg
black: what does gg mean?
white: gaf gnitaehc
I often write "Thanks for the game" regardless of whether I win or lose, but there have already been complaints previously in the forums about that phrase from people choosing to interpret it as sarcastic, as in "thanks for handing me the game". Like I said earlier, the gg wackos are bound and determined to analyze any phrase until they conclude they've been insulted, no matter what. Can you imagine what it must be like being around them in real life?
And if you do not say GG they think you insult them by giving them silence which must mean that you think they are not worhty enough to talk to you.
