Cheers but I'm not sure what you mean by that, are you mocking me? ;)

No, that was sincere. I was referring to that bit about your credentials on gg :)

(I was joking on my behalf with the "mocking me", having just wrote a lengthy post on misinterpretation Laughing) I know,my keyboards all have worned down g keys... I never thought i would one day end up writing a resume on that lol

Don't know about hacking the chess.com game servers, but if someone wants to cheat up here, they can always use an engine.

block 'em

Blocking is indeed very effective in the practical sense.

The idea of blocking in general raises the thought, I think, of how we perceive rude comments. Sometimes I feel like if I am to do that, it sort of admits that a rude person affects me. I mean, if you really don't take a rude person seriously, then you shouldn't need to block them. So for my own development in character, I try not to block people, as if saying, I don't have to block them to be fine with what they say about me.

Hey, I'm not that easy mate. At the very least you would have to buy me a drink first.

I think the 2nd 'g', as in 'game', is the key letter, as in 'something that should have no bearing on your self-worth whether you win or lose'. By the way, chess is a game and a game is chess, though it is a sporting game at that.

i bet alan_tudor always said "gg"
onthehouse

Saying 'gg' when you lose or when you win, or first or after your opponent says 'gg' or whenever; it is not rude or impolite. It's just a formality. I say 'gg' out of formality. Wheather it's a good game or a rotten game; wheather I win or lose, I say 'gg'. No problem. Now if I said, 'You Suck', or 'Go Home' or some other derogatory remark, that WOULD be impolite. Saying 'gg' is a gestue of goodwill; under all circumstances, in my opinion. A common courtesy, nothing more. If someone asks me, "How are you?", I say fine. I don't say 'rotten', even though my pet Golden Retriever of 11.5 years just died, I got a speeding ticket on the way to work and not every thing is really okay. When they asked me "How are you?", they didn't really want to know my condition. They were offering a gesture of interest without being interested. The same with 'gg'. It's a gesture. Not a boast or a put down. It's a simple meaningless gesture. Do'nt read too much into it! 'GG'.

a formality? a gesture? i can't be bothered with words for the sake of words. either mean it and say it, or don't say it.

Yeah. Instead of saying "gg" after a game for the sake of politeness, I think we should all tell our opponents "I'm trying to be polite."

Elubas

Actually, more refined, "[insert arbitrarily polite comment into my mouth so I can spit it back to you]"

The irony is that in order to remedy all the possible misinterpretations that so far have been brought forward in this thread, one would have to write the equivalence of a short story representing "good game, cheers" in the chat. This is why "gg" is the quintessence of all possible good solutions to expressing courtesy and gratitude for a good game, and as such have prevailed year after year in the gaming world. It's the very handshake of online gaming itself. All hail the gg Laughing

GG is a good thing

^ @Bodhiwan yes

And whenever a player stronger than me beats me, and says gg before I've said anything, I always take it as a compliment as if to say I put up a good fight.

If I feel like I played rather poorly, then I give them the benefit of the doubt and think they're just going through the motions of being polite.

In my experience with online chess, opponents who want to be arrogant and rude do so in a very straightforward manner... e.g. "YOU SUX QUIT CHESS LOOSER IDDIOT"

In fact I can't imagine anyone who takes "gg" as an insult lasting very long in the world of online speed chess Laughing
