gg is arrogance

The lack of sportsmanship after a game is almost as bad as no conversation at the table while you're having a pancake dinner

Completely disagree.  What are you supposed to say?  The first "g" in "gg" or "good game" does not necessarily mean "I played good" when I win.  Instead it might mean "enjoyable", but gg is quicker to type and is universally understood.  To you "It is a phrase meant to compliment the opponent", to me, it means I enjoyed the game.  If you only enjoy your victories, that is another matter for you to deal with personally, and why should the person on the receiving end of the "gg" care.

To the OP & Natalia: Don't get your panties in a wad.

Probably a bit slow, late in the evening and the beer has been flowing but if an individual states "gg" at the end of the game at what point does mind reading come into play to know if it is meant in a sincere or arrogant way...  Or are we assuming what the originator of "gg" in intending by only having "gg" without any other context clues involved....

No, I don't see any personal issues here at all... @OP... you stated at the begining of the thread that people didn't understand what you're stating... I think they understand a bit more than you may have...

Have a nice day...

I hate it when i beat my opponent, no1 talks, then rematch.. and i lose.. then i hear a good game.. SHAAADDAAAPP.

Vek_The_Gambiteer

The problem seems to be that people are inferring meaning and intent into a two letter acronym. You may consider it impolite, but to suggest that it is *intended* to be impolite is a whole different ballgame.

Like I've said, I consider it common courtesy, win or lose. If you want to view it as a taunt, you can - I think you're misinterpreting it, however.

EternalChess

You know how many times i hear a GG after i win?

2 times every 100 games..

You know how many times i hear a GG after i lose?

50 times every 100 games..

I know people dont try to be mean (some do) but its really annoying.

Maybe when you deliver it, but people do often use it as an insult. For example, what do you think of people who say gg before they are about to checkmate you in a couple moves? Don't you think that's impolite, even though the first "g" means "good"? See, that is a perfect example of how it can have a different implicit meaning.

I have had several people say something to the effect after committing a blunder which, although checkmate was not yet in sight, ended what had been, truly, a good game.

EternalChess

and that is indeed annoying.. i drop my queen then i see.. "gg"

wow? really? am i supposed to jump out of my seat squeeling and saying that it was a good game? no, i would get pissed off cause when someone says gg after i drop my queen, they just piss me off.

stanhope13

i think its traditional, nothing more

My phrasing, I see, was not quite clear.

The person committing the blunder, in the cases I mentioned, was the one who said "good game".

In real life GG is fine, but online i dont like it unless someone says gg when i win.

If they say it once after i win or draw, then im fine with them saying it when i lose, but if they keep their mouth shut till they win, then im not fine.

KillaNinja

its annoying ya know :O

I think most of the people who dislike this must never play OTB. It is just custom and courtesy to shake hands beforehand and say "good luck" and after the game is over with "good game". It is just sportsmanship.

No they're just soft. I can't believe how easily people are angered in this day and age over a game of plastic pieces. But this is a chess site and I guess one should expect big egos and small tempers.

i use wooden pieces. plastic is for n00bs. lol im jus messin
