Off subject but is it considered rude if the loser (of the game) says nothing?

AndyClifton

It beats a death threat.

winerkleiner

Damn I hope you're joking!

OTB in a tournament it is considered rude for the loser not to offer his hand.   On-line there is not a universal rule, but I think the majority don't consider it rude if the loser doesn't say anything.  I tend to give the loser some leeway.  He just put his ego on the line and lost.  He is entitled to some recovery time, and I think its definitely rude for the winner to instantly thrust his hand for a handshake.  In an OTB game I pay a lot of attention to body language, and if the loser just wants to be left alone I tend to respect that and won't press a handshake.

You seem to be spending an inordinate amount of energy concerning yourself with how you might construe the actions of others as intending offense.

You say yourself that there's no convention, so why are you trying to hold everyone to yours?  If anything here is arrogant and rude it's this.

While there is no conventions, there are players who like to use "gg" as trash talk and rub in a loss, and a large number of players who find it offensive.  Why go out of your way to offend someone?

TheGrobe

You may be right, but some is not the same as all.  Why go out of your way to take offense?

Nice, that's a very respectable policy and attitude you have!  Thanks.

Do you love chess? Or do you just like to win? If you love chess, you love every game regardless of the outcome. And it's gotta be good if you love it, right?

On the other hand, if you just like to win, you need to develop deeper goals in life. Winning and losing are outcomes. Outcomes give a form to the fate associated with each action at each moment. When was fate in your hands? What is in your hands is the ability to act. So get out there and act! Play chess. After the game, shake hands and hear what your playing partner has to say. If you can't do that, you have a serious opponent: your self.

I completely agree but it sounds a little like one of Jerry Springer's final thoughts.

Interesting. I don't know who Jerry Springer is. The bhagavad gita is my inspiration. :)

winerkleiner

Springer is a multi-millionaire (have his own talk show) who tries to help people (mostly trailer trash) to see their downfalls.  I haven't seen his show since college but I am sure it's still the same format.

P.S. I am not calling you trailer trash,it's just that Springer saids comforting advise to his audience at the close of his shows.

His show is known for topless brawls that are unusual because almost always everyone wishes the clothes had stayed on.

AndyClifton

He was also once a CIncinnati city councilman who wrote a check to a massage parlor--that bounced.

Later he became that city's mayor.
