That clairifies things. Some folks consider chess a game like Magic. No wonder superficial courtesy appears on a level with real thanks.

I think you will find chess is a game.  It is not like any other game I know, it is far and away the best there is; having said that it is a defined recreational pursuit governed by a set of rules, which is taught to children and played generally, at least in spirit, for fun.  I was not comparing it to Magic but rather the online experience of competing and sharing company in an online environment.  Having been a member of chess clubs (countless), wargames clubs, role playing groups, boardgames players and card games I can say it definitely falls into a category of social gaming and draws people the same way as other games do.  Regardless of whether you feel courtesy is superficial, it is due.  Chess is a game about manners even more than most - etiquette is part of the way I was taught.  Over the board - you remember, real chess - there is a handshake at the start and hopefully a friendly post-mortem to study the flow and mistakes on both sides.  I do not think giving a cursory "gg" is too minimum to ask.  I will not sulk if people don't but this is the Internet and both traditions exist - poor sports who storm off and people who recognise that some recognition is due regardless of how much the loss hurts.  Yes, please give your opponents real thanks where it is due; if you want to add something like "I never saw that Rh5 coming" or "very nice endgame play" then I am sure it will enrich their life, I certainly will where due.  Just the way you put it does not make me feel we are on the same wavelength.

+1.

Not only is it due, when offered it's genuine regardless of how superficial its expression may be.  Seems the two things (the intent and the means) have become somewhat confused.

After saying ''gg'' at the end of a game often use the ''trophy'' facility on chess.com to convey further match-comment as the ''game-chat-box'' is so naff.

I'm glad you don't "sport" one either. I am "gonna" guess you're a remedial English drop-out.

ok im just sayin here, dont mind me at all, but gg means owned. if your gona play me and not even say hello to me or anythin, and you say "gg" after you win, your basicly sayin 'hahahaha noob owned lol'. im just letin y'all know. if its a friends game or whatever obviously say whatever you want but if not, dont say gg to me. im just sayin.  kthxbai :)

If you say GG you basicly say "Good game". Not " LOL OWNED TARD L2P!". If they would like to say "owned" or something like that, they can just type it. It's not like they're gonna get a ban or something.

I'd rather spend time playing chess than creating and typing unique messages to prior opponents. so it's gg or nothing for me

arpack

"good game" is different than gg. Some people use gg as "good game", but others take it as an insult. Speaking of courtesy, you can spare the 6 extra letters to make them feel warm and fuzzy 100% of the time. Personally, I think gg is like "nice try" ... is a compliment literally, but thats not the implied meaning

"You are awesome you should feel warm and fuzzy" is different than "good game." you can spare the extra 36 letters to let them know you have time to kill

Indeed, so simple and concise.  And powerful too.  Laughing

If some people take gg as an insult, then how would they like "gg... NOT!" So I reckon people should just be happy with a simple gg and move on.  Tongue Out

After 1600 posts, I assure you we will "take it" however this shit is served up.  Laughing

Walter0508

In Chess, it's quite possible to get pwned. Or at least, Pawned.
