How do you prevent mouse slips?

I can't tell you how many games I've lost because I pick up a piece, hover it, decide I want to think some more, attempt to return the piece to its original square, only to my horror to find out I put it back on a different square.  Of course it's usually my queen and it's usually left en prize to be captured immediately and the game ends quickly in tatters.  Does this happen to anyone else and how do you prevent it?

Martin_Stahl

Drag it off the board or to an obvious illegal square instead.

I wouldnt exactly call a mouse slip a "horror"

Happens to me all the time. I try to signal initial and destiny squares now, but blitz us fast...!

When I'm not sure what square to put it back on, I move my piece/cursor all the way off the board. When I release it, it jumps back to the square it was on at the start of the move.

Even I have lost my important piece queen many times

That's exactly what I do.

Here is a topic that I created on this subject.

Please note that it is a possible solution to the problem.

Don't drag it, just click original piece first and then click destination place as a second click, this method is way less prone to misclick.

Can't you enable the "submit" button for live chess? If so it could be helpful if you're playing rapid or longer blitz, no?

That`s A Great Tip!

I Think It`s Also Possible To Just Click On The Piece And Click On The Square You Want To Move It To! Without Dragging, Just Clicking! :-D

I agree

I have no mouse slip, I use a trackball.

If you can't solve it then click the piece and then click where the piece should be moved to.

I do feel sorry for my opponent when he/she plays Kf8 instead of castling as they have obviously dropped the King.

That's your own fault for picking it up too early.

OTB, you'd have a lot of problems with touch move.

Correct, I do it the same

Solution: PRETEND to play a mouse slip, and instead play a move that looks stupid, but carries a PUNCH in case the piece is captured!

The REVENGE of anyone who ever suffered from a mouse slip!!

Case in point: https://www.chess.com/forum/view/general/fun-attacking-game

On another note - recently I had an opponent agree to a draw after I made a most obvious mouse slip in the opening

I asked for a draw - which was very kindly granted. The opponent was from India.

I played game two as white - fully intending to repeat the line (without the King move) on game three. My opponent played some 15 or 18 very reasonable moves - and then disconnected in an equal and rich position - and simply lost!

I wrote him a note, that he can have his rating points back any time simply by asking - but haven't heard from him since.

So now I have a 2040 blitz rating - with a nine-point (or so) debt.
