Value of the pieces is irrelevant. You win by checkmating your opponent without running out of time.
If you run out of time you will lose, unless your opponent does not have sufficient mating material in which case it is a draw.

I don't understand how when a player is winning a game by capturing many more of his or her opponent's players....the player winning can still lose from running out of time, even though he is ahead by captured player value.
