Menu Selection No Longer Starts a Game

Until recently
Play -> Live Chess -> 30 minutes

would automatically start a 30 minute game. Now it just goes to Live Chess where I can set up the kind of game I want.

Is there a setting I've changed or does the menu just waist my time?

The menu hasn't changed in the browser version of V3. Is that what you are using?

/ Waste

yes

And the menu still looks the same, just the result no game starts.

I can't honestly remember if it took 2 clicks or 1 click.

Then what is the point of the time.  It should just be a click to "Live Chess"

Good, I don't want it starting games for me unless I click the right button.

If they changed it, it was probably because a lot of people started games accidentally then abandoned them.

So they would rather an extra mouse click to be certain the player wants to play than have players abandon games.

If you don't want games to start right away, then you just click live chess. No problem.

The other buttons used to issue a seek for a 30 min, 10 min, 3/2, or whichever you clicked on.  No more, they're broken.  For instance, when I click on 30 min, it takes me into live chess but doesn't issue a seek for the time control game desired.  Not only that, but it doesn't even change the time control to correspond to the button I clicked.

Somebody broke something in the code.

The reply from support was:

". . . That did that because we had lots of members accidentally clicking on that and not really wanting to play. So they didn’t want to lose on points or get a Fair play message when exiting out! . . . "

So, Chess.com disabled their menu because some people didn't want actually play a 30 minute live chess game when they navigated Play > Live > 30 minutes.

Why do the inept determine how the site works?

I've chosen to not renew my premium membership in protest.

Wow, that is unfortunate.  It does seem crazy that they changed this feature to accommodate the inept, dumbing it down to the lowest common denominator.  Chess players should be smart enough to figure that simple menu out.

As you pointed out, they should fix the menu to remove the time buttons if this is the route they're going.

I do like this site quite a bit, and generally think it runs well.  But I disagree with their approach here.

Menus are for ordering food at restaurants, not for playing chess.
