What am I supposed to do when the other guy disconnects?

Sometimes I think I make people angry very early in the game, with say 30+ minutes left on the clock.  And then, even though they have a good connection, they randomly disconnect.

So I sit there for a few minutes and they don't come back.  And then I either sit around for 30 mintues doing absolutely nothing, and not joining other games, or I resign so that I can play chess.  This has happened at least 4 times where i've lost points for resigning, and i've only been signed up for a few days.

Or perhaps you can play 2 games of live chess at once?  Maybe its the case where I can start another game and let the time run out to get the win, but then if they come back i'm playing 2 fast games of chess at the same time.  Not going to work.

And it looks like we can't just settle for a draw when the other guy disconnects.  Anyone care to comment?  Thanks.

In my experience, the games times out after about 3-5 mintues and you get a win. I've been playing for just over one month and this has happened twice.

For chess playing fun, just resign and move on. Ratings mean doodoo to me in this format, just play chess and have fun. Even if you resign to an odd such game here and there, overtime such losses will not adversely affect your rating too much anyway because the algorhythim is pretty smart and it will zero in on your real capability. The more games you play, the less it will matter.

To be fair, this is a total pain in the a**, disconnects happen to me just as I am closing in on a win quite a lot. I agree with the OP. However, @wishiwonthatone has a good point - at the end of the day, the ratings are just a little guide to you, they're pretty irrelevant, so enjoy the game, learn from it and move on to your next win! :P

I think what's worse is when you get the other guy into a game losing situation, and he gets so angry that he just leaves his computer and lets you win by the time running out rather than resigning or checkmate.  It happened to me twice last night, had to sit for 25 minutes to get the win...

Shorter games might solve the problem. And I believe that premium members can play multiple live games.

yeah, sometimes its good to go a little shorter with a higher bonus time.  But then if I have to sit around for 25 minutes, a couple of youtube vids of some GM chess games does the trick :)
