I feel the same way. I messed up the last step of a 3-step puzzle, which also resulted in a -12 point penalty.

I understand that the previous chess elos were inflated but the new system in place feel way too punishing.
I am still learning the game and enjoyed puzzles. Now it just just feels like trash if you make a mistake, even on a partially completed puzzle. Losing ~6 times the amount you gain feels like over kill.
Try changing your puzzle Difficulty setting to Hard or Extra Hard. The default is Standard where the average rating of puzzles is lower than your current puzzle rating. That means you'll gain fewer points on a success and lose more on a failure.
On the other settings, the puzzle ratings will be closer to yours, so you will get more on a success and lose less on a failure. However, you'll tend to miss more on average, so your total point change will be similar to Standard.
