It's kind of different. How about putting some more light on it?

Sure. In the movie Searching for Bobby Fischer the most telling scene for me was when Bruce (the teacher) sets up a problem for Josh (the student) on the chess board. Josh peers at it for a moment and says “ I can’t solve it. “ Then Bruce says “ Let me help you. “ and sweeps the board clear. Josh then rests his chin on his folded arms and stares at the vacant board. Bruce was making the point , in a zen-like way , that the pieces are merely placeholders and powerless. The real game develops in the mind from the present moment to the future through the realization of the imagination which is not visible to the eyes.
Thank you for the details @cletejohnsburg. It's kind of more clear now. Thinking of instances where have seen videos of players like Hikaru and Magnus looking into the air and thinking of games (or say, playing games in their mind) without an actual board or pieces. The real game is not the one played on the board, it's the one played off the board.
Good catch on the duplicates—still, it’s a fascinating list overall. The bit about the Enigma Machine always gets me thinking about how many unsung minds quietly shaped history. Claude Shannon's contribution really adds depth to that story. Kind of like how the [LunarCalendar]() quietly shapes so many cultural and religious rhythms, yet rarely gets the spotlight it deserves. Hidden frameworks, visible impact.
