am i right in thinking there is only one solution but it depends on which pawn black just moved?  looks like en passant to me, as no other piece can check in time.

ok, this is tough, it seems likely that the move was cxd6 to give a gap for the 2 forward pawns to get through, but i cant see well enough to disprove them coming from the right side, and then more pawns shifting over to take their place, for example, the a and b pawns could now be on c and d, although then the c pawn would have a long journey...  hmm ok i'm pretty sure they came from the left, but i would be interested in knowing, if you got this from a book, a proof of the answer.

All right, here is the book solution: To get where they are now, the white pawns made 10 captures. Since there are still six black pieces on the board, the pawns took every other piece, including the c8-bishop.

If black's last move was d7-d5, the b-pawn and d-pawn would have prevented the bishop from getting out and getting captured by a white pawn. Black's last move therefore was f7-f5, and the solution is 1. gxf6 e.p. and 2. f7#.

how is 0-o possible, the king is on h1 and the rook is on e1

the trouble is, that argument somewhat contradicts the solution to the 2nd problem where it is only mate in 1 if the king wasnt merely placed on that square for the puzzle Tongue out

0-0 is illegal because the rook should be on h1 and the king on e1
