You have an error on move 4.  Your "solution" is 4...Rd8+ but 4...Qf1# is better.

 I was about to say the same thing. The h rook is blocked by the knight so there's no need to take it.

what i'm saying is why doesn't white protect the pawn on g2 at all?  instead of moving the queen to c2, white could move the queen to f3, offering a queen trade.  protecting the g2 pawn would stop the line for black.  it seems like a bad move not protecting the g2 pawn.

The other color's movess should be forced, or at least the best move available. That way you can calculate a line. White's moves aren't forced here, so no, it shouldn't be a puzzle.
