Last white move?

The last 4 moves were (highlight to see): 1... Qh5+ 2. g4 fxg3+ ep. 3. Kxg3+

I first thought the solution was obviously axb8=B+, but that's impossible because the promoting pawn would have to be the initial f, and to get the white pawns to their current positions  you'd need them to capture all the other 10 captured black pieces and pawns. Since the black dark-squared bishop cannot have left f8, it was not captured by a pawn and so axb8=B+ is impossible to set up. (Highlight to see)

From a game of mine. I was black, but white missed the win.

Why would the GM like this puzzle?  Much stronger is 1. bxc8=Q+ Kxc8 (forced) 2. Qxe7, leaving white up a full queen rather than just up a knight and a pawn?surprise.pnghappy.png  The queen sacrifice and underpromotion are nice but hardly necessary.happy.png

this reminds me of a puzzle where you have to do this and its necessary to win, but here you are right promoting to a queen on the first move is much better

I asked Ben and he said the one below is better. But even this is far from his favorite puzzle.

White to play and win.

I figured it might be something like that but I would guess GM's don't care for those types of puzzles.happy.png

Yes.  It's very important to check all of the small details when posting a puzzle.happy.png

Your solution is too long.  Just the simple 2...Kc5! or 2...Kb5! is two moves quicker.  If 2....Kc5! (or 2...Kb5!) 3. a8=Q (3. Ka8 Qc8#) then 3...Kb6! reaches your solution position by move three rather than move five.
