mate in 16!!!!
why didn't white destroy the rook and play Rxh8# ???
Because white can only make one move at a time. It must be possible for black to make a move in between. Well, joshgregory7 said it differently, but correctly, by posting one word "stalemate". It is the whole point of understanding the puzzle.
What's wrong with 1. c8=Q#?
You already start off IN check.
Good puzzle. Didn't see the end until black took the pawn.
Funny one. Looked like a chase in a Chaplin movie.
Actually, it is mate in 17 since 8 RF1-Re8 9 g4-Re1+ prolonges the mate by one move.
I have never laughed out loud at a chess puzzle. My sides are still aching. Well done. I feel like I've just taken a drivers exam.
