The Frog, the princess and the flies.

Chapter 1 The Frog meets the princess.

Once upon a time there was an ugly frog who could catch flies able to travel 2200mm per second, but found he was able to catch many flies that could travel 2600mm/s if he was very patient. Whenever he tried to catch a 2800+ mm/s fly he never came anywhere close to catching it...

However, he would often do some very clever manoevres with his tongue that he thought should catch the fly, only to find he should have used, a better one. One day he met a very clever princess called Houdarina. She showed him that often his tongue should have caught the fly, but the fly wasn't playing fair and would cheat. The frog grew to dislike many of the fast flies.

One day, a majician came along and turned the frog into a prince who could insist the flies behaved fairly, and stop cheating. The princess still didn't think much of the frog and nor did many of the other frogs in the swamp who were much faster than he was, and had learnt many of the cheats that the flies used.

Although he had arranged for the flies to behave more fairly, they now behaved in more complex ways to try to avoid the frogs in the swamp, so the frogs had to be much more cunning, and think more deeply, rather than learning the cheating ways of the flies.

The frog would often try to understand and calculate to great depth their cunning ideas, to explain them to the other frogs. Over time he came to be able to calculate their cunning ways to great depth, and breadth, and see them all at the same time, which was something he thought he would never be able to do.

He found this helped him more in the real world away from the swamp where nearly all flies behaved in very cunning, and complex ways.

There were many frogs in the swamp, though who didn't want to spend time learning the flies cunning ideas, because they seemed too complex, and wanted to stop the frog bringing any of the new flies to the swamp (a rather stagnant place at times)

Chapter 2 The Wizard comes to the swamp.

Often the frog would wish he could be like the princess, but knew he should be true to himself.

One day, he wondered if the wise wizard could come to talk to the other frogs

He invited the wizard, who explained patiently to other frogs, as he had had to do many times to the frog, that these new clever flies wouldn't hurt them if they didn't catch them. The frogs wanted the new flies to only go to the part of the swamp where the dragonflies lived, so they wouldn't be bothered by them. Unfortunately the new flies had to fly through their part of the swamp to get there.

The frogs came up with many ideas to prevent this from happening. One frog asked the wizard to conjure up a bridge to take them to the other part of the swamp.

Another asked the wizard for a space rocket.

Other frogs had similar ideas.

The wizard smiled and shook his head wisely, asking if they really wanted to change their swamp changed, didn't want to learn from the new flies, and that it wasn't in his power to conjure up these things anyway.

Chapter 3 The clever dragonflies.

The dragonflies were marvelled at by all the frogs. Nothing could match the speed, and beauty of their flight, and the effortless way they seemed to catch even the quickest of flies.

Some of the dragonflies began to tell the frogs how pleased they were with the new flies. The frog decided to let the other frogs know what these amazing dragonflies were saying, in the hope they might see the beauty of the new flies.

Dragonfly GM AlexanderL : ‘this idea of bringing the last reserve into the game and having harmony of the pieces is just lovely. I'm happy that tactics trainer is getting new types of puzzles to make your brain work.’

'Wow this one is great. Innocent looking move quiet move, .......... this move didn't occur to me. Very nice !

to be continued...

Chapter 4 A plague of flies

One day it became too much for some of the frogs. We're sick of chasing these new fast, clever flies.

The frogs said, 'we don't care how beautiful they are, they can't teach us anything, they're far too clever for us. Anyway they're not real flies, that old wizard must have made them up. They're nothing like the real world.

The frog and the wizard, tried to tell them that the flies had come from the real world, and were more real than many of the old flies, many of whom had been painted by 'composers' from hundreds of years ago, or passed unchanged from generation to generation...

Although the frogs rarely saw old flies in the real world, they had seen them so often in books that they had come to believe that is how flies should behave.

Chapter 5 The dark wizard

The story behind the swamp went back many years to a time when a great dark wizard, named 'Darth Yoda' visited a beautiful kingdom.

Unfortunately they didn't invite him to a really good party because he was green, so he turned everyone into little green frogs to see how they would feel to be green. You can probably guess what he turned the kingdom into.

Fortunately a clever wizard broke the spell by bringing the frogs some very cunning flies.

Everybody turned back into happy people, the 'frog' said sorry for not listening to the other 'frogs' worries, and the 'frogs' said sorry for not liking the frog. The frog even noticed that some of the new flies had a bit of dark majic in them, and together they made sure these wouldn't cause a problem again.

The frog found change was a huge relief with lots of time to do the things he had been wanting to do for ages.

They all lived happily ever after. Smile

DJDopa, did you really do the checks on this one? Unfortunately, it is quite ambiguous.

A few reasons :

Time consuming (main reason) - reducing time I have to improve my game

Proportion of ambiguous submissions still high.

Saying 'no' to submissions wasn't getting any easier despite the guidelines.

-ve Feedback eg.http://www.chess.com/tactics/server?id=403913 (more numerous than +ve feedback)

Numerous complaints about :

- lack of detailed analysis.

- people losing rating points as a new problem gains points, with some people being 'hit' by several new problems in a session.

Alternatives :

- automation possible, ideally a simple click of a button from a position in a game with new problems able to be voted off if disliked.

Yeah, being able to rate / up-, downvote problems would be really good. There are many very smart and good puzzles and some that are just repetitive and boring while not being really helpful. For example most 1k problems with hanging piece which may prove helpful in the future for a bullet game only.

TheIronDuke

well thanks for all the hard work you put in guys! We appreciate it.

Wow....39 pages And he's closing submissions.

Thanks anyways.

2... g4 looks like it gives the king an escape, so that'd be expected in a puzzle.  Did you check this with a computer?

Any ways, they're no longer taking submissions.

This is the wrong place to discuss this, but I don't think studies are of no value.

Dual solution on the final move (either pawn), good otherwise but they aren't updating this any more.
