Rating drops multiple times for same puzzle now?

Just today it seems like now if you get a puzzle wrong and then you try something else that’s also wrong, your puzzle rating continues to drop every single time. It used to be that you could only miss it once and then freely experiment without any negative impact to your rating. Is this a new setting and if so, is there a way to change it? I find it very frustrating and not the way I like to learn.

Also, it’s ridiculous that there was no alert or warning as to the change.

From what I can tell, when you retry the puzzle if you get it wrong, your rating goes down, but if you get it right your rating just stays flat. So what’s the upside of attempting again and trying to learn from your mistakes?
