Shortest-proof-game challenge

A 65.5-move proof game for this position was posted in the Illegal Position Contest! thread, but that's not the shortest game possible. How low can you go?

I think you're probably right about that. I'm sorry the original cast of characters at the beginning of this thread aren't still around.

It's alright. Not all chess problemists can stick to one thing forever!

Rewan, have your worked on #441?

I'll get to it!

And also, I missed an easy way to save a further ply. Now it is surely optimal.

The pawn structure is legal alright, but the northeast corner is looking pretty impossible to reach. It's too airlocked to shove all those pieces in and slew them around. Furthermore, the knight needs to block the check from the rook first, making it even more absurdly difficult,

RewanDemontay

I can get everything in but the knight in place in a timely manner.

RewanDemontay

It's either that, or the rook becomes pinned.

Ilampozhil25

maybe whites knight gets there after blacks rook(s) but before whites rook

Ilampozhil25

like on move 37 whites knight starts getting to h6 while blacks pawns march and then the rooks get where they should

RewanDemontay

But now the bishop is locked out and all that jazz. It's more or less an illegal position as far I can hellin' tell.

Well then you best link me that proof game if you want it done faster.

Thank you!

At the moment, this is how low I can go!

Rewan, your game (with 51. Qd1) is a great result, better than what I was able to do. I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out to be the shortest. I'm impressed by how quickly you came up  with it.

I posted it as an illegal position, with the black pawn at a4 instead of a3.

Yes, I went a page back and saw that. Extravagant!

And thank you! I saw a few ways to cut corners on moves counts, particularly the Black knights, king, and light bishop.

P.S. I fixed the queen's position in my previous post.

Here is a related type of problem. From the initial array, find the shortest sequence of legal moves leading to a mate delivered by the white c-pawn.

Graywing13

Could you mate with a promoted c-pawn? If so, this doesn't look too bad
