The hardest ever mate in 3 puzzle

white to move

I won't reveal that one, too- I know it.

It's a Sam Loyd composition.

In general, all those three movers with effectively a single variation are rather easy.

Here is another three mover, which is not so hard (although certainly harder than the previous), and where the second move is harder to find than the first one. The main variation of the problem is extremely beautiful.

White to play and mate in 3.

watcha isnt it 1.Rxh3+ Kxh3 2.Qf3+ Kh4 3.Qg3#

I am struggling to solve pfren's puzzle.

Spawkle529, it is more subtle than this. The g5 pawn is undefended, so the black king can take it. Your third move is actually not mate.

then 2.Qg8#

1.Rxh3 Kxh3 2.Qf3+ Kh4 3.Qg3+ Kxg5.

Thanks a lot ....

Sam Loyd would often compose problems where the most unlikely move on the board was the key move, and 1.Qh1 was certainly one of them.

Roost1513 has permanently left the building. His solution posted 2 years ago was correct though. You mixed up his two variations.

@ I sure did. Thanks,I need to quit leaping to conclusions so easily. I didn't look at the date and jumped over the right sequence for that move.

It's an imperfect solution but,

1. Qg2 hxg2 2. Nxg2+ Kxg5 3. h4#

I don't know the solution if the pawn doesn't capture the queen though

Not being able to find part of the solution of a genuine composition usually means that all of your solution is wrong. You stumbled onto a "try". And so it is in this case.

Still, there is some value in your attempt. Continue on that thought line.
