Some people simply start too many threads and many of them are useless or simply too repetitive or "blowing their own horn" type threads. It only takes a few threads to spot these " attention mongers" and when I do I NEVER check any threads they start after that. The best example I can think of is awardchess , he starts a thread and then more than 50% of the thread consists of posts by him. I also never look at problems/puzzles that are what I consider ridiculous or cant come from an actual game. Waste of time/effort imo.
Win or Draw 2

Rich, what you must remember is that compositions are a different discipline from playing, although using the same rules.
I compose puzzles for my own amusement, and in many (most?) of them White has a clear winning advantage, but it's still fun to spot the forced mate in # number of moves.
eg, look at this, White can win anyway he likes, but there is only one mate in 4. What's the point?, you say, well, there are lessons about losing moves, getting the opposition, escape squares, loosing a tempo.... But what I'm proudest of is that the key move sometimes brings a smile to somebody's face :)

Sorry, eyesight's not what it used to be :)
The position in post #30 is a prime example of the type of positions I never try to solve. I take one look at it and figure the guys I play would have resigned a long time ago, being 3 pieces down ! So, how likely am I to ever have this position in an otb game ? Ok, so if I do and my opponent is one of those who dont believe in resigning ( I dont know any players above 1800 like this btw ) I KNOW I can win this game in many ways without having to strain and find the quickest or easiest win, so, why bother ?
Reb, (nailed it that time), you get composers that never play, and players that never compose.
Composition is an artform (?) using the rules of chess. There is a task, to complete the task there is only one solution.
It's a disciple with its own jargon, blocks, self blocks, iterferences, valves, bi-valves....
I have a puzzle somewhere where white has a key move, Black has over twenty responses, and after each response there is a different mate. The composer set himself a task of achieving the greatest number of replies. You got to admire that....
Hey, it's an acquired taste.

I agree with you. I definitely am a player that never composes but I do work on problems/compositions/puzzles IF they are of the type that I think can occur in an otb game and will help strengthen my otb game.

Lord_Chaos, some of yours are good, some are simple, and some are unsound. I didn't mean your content specifically, sorry if it sounded that way! I just posted it on this thread because people were already discussing it.
