I bet so! Surprised

Never seen any violent weather phenomenon, except for some huge sea storms on Galician coast. On my wife's town on inner Galicia there's a drizzle in winter which can last for months, but here in Madrid you have nothing more than a blue sky almost every day of the year.

All that blue sky is a lot different than here. I just looked up the sunshine levels-- the Soo (Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, which is about 30 km from my house) averages only 66 days a year that are classified as "sunny" (zero to 30% cloud cover), 90 days a year that are classified as "partly sunny" (40% to 70% cloud cover), and the other 209 days have 80% or higher cloud cover.

That works for me, though. I've never been a fan of the sun. I wear hats, use sunscreen, and seek shade.

Al's priority list for hurricane evacuation items:

1) golf clubs
2) cat
3) computer
4) wallet

Well, sure. I mean, she's self-evacuating, right? Al's probably similarly positioned on her evac list.

I didn't expect to hear from you for a couple days yet. I figured you'd probably washed up on shore somewhere by now, but wouldn't have any power available until next week.

It's amazing how Matthew traced right along the coast, just far enough away to keep things from getting really nasty. Let's see if Georgia and South Carolina do as well.

i only lost power for a few hours, so i was lucky. some parts of the coast, not so lucky.

We're more than a week past the average date for first frost for the Soo, but this year it hasn't yet been close. The lowest temperature so far was a balmy 46°F on September 24. There were only 3 nights in September that dipped below 50°.

OK, Al, I'm impressed. We know this is really you . . .

The 14 inches of rain that Matthew dumped on Fayetteville, NC on Saturday was a record for the city. Several NC rivers have set record flood levels, some more than 2 feet higher than the previous record. Early estimates have U.S. damage topping $6 billion.

You have to go back to Hurricane Stan (2005) for an Atlantic hurricane causing more deaths than Matthew-- Stan killed more than 1600 in Mexico and the Caribbean. Stan was the (relatively) weak storm, wind-wise, that barely attained hurricane status, but it crossed over the Yucatan peninsula and spread torrential rains across 6 countries. Massive mudslides in the mountains accounted for most of the deaths.

The first big gale of November has arrived in my area. Current winds here are about 30 mph with gusts to 50 mph, which isn't so horrible (though the power is likely to go out all over). But the wind has already been going long enough so the current wave heights on Lake Superior have already built up to higher than 20 feet just off of Grand Marais. The swell should continue to increase with another 2 days of steady wind projected.

20 minutes ago Weather Buoy Station 45172, located at a water depth of 36 meters (118 feet), recorded winds at 37 knots (42 mph) and waves at 23.3 feet height. That buoy is something like 4 or 5 miles offshore from Grand Marais.

I shot a vid (52 seconds) off the back deck about an hour ago. The waves aren't very big because the water here is pretty well protected. Just down the road the wind was 40 mph gusting to 50 mph when I grabbed the vid.

The view is from about 25 or 30 feet above the water level.

I think Al sees sand and water as just things that eat golf balls.

Avatar of AlCzervik
