You've attracted the attention of the resident Nothing bird expert, Hess...a correction, the Family to which the Snipe belongs is actually the Scolopacidae Family. of which the Wilson's Snipe is the species found in USA.

You're welcome. happy.png

@ Snipe  Did you know that:  A snipe hunt is a type of practical joke, in existence in North America as early as the 1840s, in which an unsuspecting newcomer is duped into trying to catch a non-existent animal called a snipe. While snipe are an actual family of birds, a snipe hunt is a quest for an imaginary creature whose description varies.  Google Alert.

I thought that was in England ?

I am sure it could be held any country with gullible saps.

@ Toire   Yeah I know that a Snipe is a North American Bird but the yahoos out there on a snipe hunt are looking for some mysterious furry creature because they have been duped.

That snipe hunt, I've always met the expression as a wild duck hunt. Maybe it is the way they translate it to Spanish.

Hmm, there is an English phrase "wild goose chase" I wonder if that's related.

A snipe hunt, to me, is such a niche cultural thing that I wouldn't expect other cultures to be aware of it. I mean, I've barely heard of it.

For context, the way I've usually seen it is something like a youth group (like boy scouts) and they're gathered together in some wooded area and told to hunt snipes, and so they run around in the dark on a faux adventure. It's like a joke an older child or adult may play on a younger child.

But a "wild goose chase" can be applied to all sorts of things. Like an adult answering an advertisement for some get rich quick scheme.

I've never seen that expression in Spanish, only in texts originally written in English.

Ron, I don't know but some people say that bulls can't spot colours. Actually I've seen many bullfights without red capes. happy.png

Well, they say "pato salvaje".

Ah, if I'd translate a translation back to English, probably it wouldn't resemble the original in the least...

I have to go the DMV tomorrow to register the Woman's new, used car. I dread it, so many people just sitting there with their thumb somewhere where the sun don't shine and I am 100+ in line.
