Am I too old for video games?

Been addicted to console type RPG games ever since Playstation One came out. I have a family now and in few years I'll be 40. Is it still acceptable for someone my age to be into video games so much? My wife is on me about it all the time, telling me I'm not a teen anymore. She's a bit of a hypocrite, but I guess from her point of view Candy Crush doesn't count. What do you guys think? Is it socially acceptable these days to play video games into your 40's, especially since I grew up with it and they just keep getting better and better.

Everyone has something he/she likes to do so if you like video games I think you should play them, but not as much as a teen of course. I know some teen guys who play 24/7 and I wish they knew life is so much more than their room

Society doesn't need to know.  Tell your wife to crush her candies while you save Zelda - win win. Have the courage to seek the wisdom that will give you power.

I guess my wife looks at video games as a sign of not growing up. I pay most of the bills around here though, and I put responsibilities first. It's not like I'm 36 living in my Mom's basement playing them.  I wonder if the video gamer stereotype is old news, kind of like a grown man having long hair at a time when society would say the same thing, he's too old and never gonna grow up. My doctor has long hair and wears things like Rolling Stones t-shirts to work. Old stereotype.

Depends how much time you dedicate to it and what kind of games you play.

But... video games are priorities.

Age isn't a factor, when it comes to hobbies. If you like doing something, do it and don't listen to people trying to discourage you from it by employing old stereotypes. wink.png "Socially acceptable" shouldn't come into equation at all, in my opinion: this is your life, not the society's life.

Video games are a very big hobby of mine personally (I'm nearing the age of 30, so pretty much a grown guy as well). One recommendation I would give, however, is to stay away from gaming communities. Like you said, the games keep getting better and better, but the gamers simultaneously keep getting more and more spoiled, and the toxicity and negativity in that community is off the charts nowadays.

Stick to a circle of like-minded friends supporting you in enjoying your hobby, and your wife will come along eventually. happy.png

I don't think you should play video games. They are addictive and change the way your brain works.
