Another Cheating Case
Yes, is gonna be difficult keeping an eye on the board and the other on the opponent. I don't know if FIDE can stop this terrible behavior.
Of course they can:
- Ban all mobiles/tablets/monroi's.
- Lead-lined wc's.
Inevitably in Ireland this leads to a ''fight''! Expect there may be many more.
Technology grows amazingly. Imagine a top GM in two or three years with a chip under his skin or something like that. Like the Karpov-Korchnoi stuff with hypnotist, KGB, microphones, spys, but in a futuristic way. Who knows.
Not so far-fetched as sounds.
Just have to hope advancing-technology also aids detection of these devices.
Also, possible game analysis to discuss with them would be a good way to catch them cheating.
But, what if the opponent refuses to do it, saying that he's so tired o something like that.
With the advance of technology it is increasingly difficult to stop cheating. Even using the engine at 1 or 2 critical positions will bring home the full point!
May be we should simply switch over to Advanced Chess.. No cheating accusations, great quality of games and good money for programmers like me!!
On a serious note, some practical measures should be enforced:
- only allow use of rest rooms in the first 30mins or not allow at all. I mean often how often do you visit the restroom when you are watching a 2.5 hr movie?
- or players should drop their mobiles at the Arbiters desk when they wish to visit the rest room
- invest in a sophisticated technology which can automatically detect engines running in the chess hall!
I was thinking of getting a Monroi because I keep messing up my score sheets, but with this kind of behavior becoming so prevelant, paper and pencil it is. Have a feeling the electronics will be banned at some point.
If you think your opponent is cheating, please be a sore loser and check what he/she is doing in the hallway/skittles room/bathroom (joke on last one), check their ears, glasses and hats for god sakes.
If they refuse ask why, and if they answer with hesitancy that is suspicious then immediately contact the TD.
What exactly is that supposed to reveal? Even if the opponent talks silly lines, then what? Is the arbiter going to revert the result just because the winner talked crazy after the scoresheet has been signed? You only remain with unanswered doubts, nothing more.
This is a serious problem and we really need a fix because I don't actually see what an organizer can do if a player goes to the bathroom to check his tablet. The players can go as often as they need and if they have an accomplice in the bathroom, they can be caught only by chance. This behaviour won't happen at super-GM level tournaments, but I can see it becoming more and more frequent in large opens.
Ban Electronic devices from playing area. Any person caught with a phone, or any of that sort will be forfited. Players much turn in their phones to a bucket next to the playing area, or dont bring their phones. They are subjected to random searches.
Also make the restrooms inside the playing hall, or just make the section between the playing area to the restroom segregated from spectators. There should be Chess Players only restrooms.
What if my phone is off and in my pocket, do I automatically forfeit, or is it just if my phone is on? What if my phone doesn't have a way to get to the internet? Do I still forfeit?

Don't bring a phone to a match in the first place. I believe they should have some back breaking rules like if you have to make a call during a match then you must forfeit your game, every major tournament shows top players NEVER having to make calls during matches, so why can't this work at lower levels. Otherwise why the hell are you in the tournament if you can't sort out your priorities?
If you have an emergency, then you will forfeit your match, tis that simple.

If some joker at a chess tournament wants to search me, I would take offence. I wouldn't have to worry much though, my play at tournaments is as woeful as my play here.
Another cheating case.
Gabriel Mirza a 47 years old player from Limerick, caught his opponent, a 16 years old from the Irish Chess Union, cheating on him using a tablet in the Cork Congress Chess Open Tournament with a prize of 400 euros. The teenager went to the bathroom at least 20 times to use an engine.
