Yeah it's interesting to think about what makes the line so memorable.
I mean, the first line is shocking, but also, on 2nd look, all the images it conjures have a similar color palette. Pandas are black and white, beaches covered in oil are black and white, breathing smoke is black. It also spans destroying life, destroying beauty in nature, and then finally self destruction. The palette mirrors the tone, and progresses from black and white, to black covering white, to just black.
When I was a kid such analysis seemed like nonsense, but as an adult I can appreciate it

It's also important the it's beaches he'd "never see" because it's talking about destruction in the abstract sense... the destruction of natural beauty itself, and then as a final result, these feelings will destroy himself.
I'd never analyzed this before... but I figured a random 10 year old's forum about pandas was the appropriate time and place LOL

Interesting, I was thinking about it as a commentary on global warming, and a sense of giving into inevitable destruction -- i was thinking the beaches would probably be destroyed anyway

Oh that's cool... yeah because Panadas are going extinct, and beaches are going extinct, so the speaker is... coming to terms with their own mortality... or something. That's a fun interpretation.
