I was laying in bed, when I heard someone yelling downstairs. I pulled the covers over my head, blocking out the sunlight. My mom and dad were downstairs, and they were fighting again. I closed my eyes, begging for more sleep, to escape back into that gentle realm of quietness, and slumber but once I was awake, i had to get up . I groaned and pulled back my covers. I climbed out of bed and walked over to my closet. When I opened the door, I reached in and grabbed the pink silk dress that I got specifically for my birthday. I stared at it for a while and then finally took it off the hanger. As I started to slip it on my mom knocked on the door. “Scarlet, honey?” I jumped as her voice rang loudly into the quietness of my room. I gulped. “Yes ma’am?” I heard a long sigh. “I’m going to go li- I mean VISIT grandma and grandpa for a little while…” I gasped aloud. By this point, I had changed back into my pj’s, and I threw open the door. “ What do you MEAN you’re leaving!?” She sighed again. A low, sad sound. “Honey, it’s just that your father and I are having some trouble getting along right now and I don’t want you to be in the middle of us.” She looked deep into my eyes, and they were so sad and exhausted that I felt bad for practically yelling at her a second ago. “When will you be back?” I whispered anxiously. She bit her lip, before looking back at me. “As soon as your father and I figure this out.” She looked at me again and tried to smile. “ it’s going to be okay, Scarlet.” I looked up at her. She looked so sure, that I almost believed her, but then I remembered that I had an upcoming competition. “Mom! What about my competition?! For gymnastics?” All the blood seemed to drain from her face. “Sweetie… I’m not going to be here for it.” I couldn’t believe it. “What?! You can’t just leave suddenly and just miss this! I’ve been looking forward to this for MONTHS mom! MONTHS!” As I yelled, she seemed to shrink, getting smaller with every word I said. “I know. I’m sorry.” She looked at the floor and stared at it for a minute. And in my anger, I shut my door in her face and threw myself onto my bed, curling into a ball and letting the silent tears trickle down my cheeks.
