Ethan, thank you for taking the time to respond to this thread. I've been waiting long for someone to come along and try to help.
Do I read Chinese? I know a few characters. I know that 王 is interchangeably "King" and "jade". Otherwise, aside from about 20-30 characters, I'm illiterate, by definition.
Also, I just discovered that 媓 does in fact exist (according to wiktionary.com). What does it mean? Do you know?

So, this character: 媓. Do you know what it means?? Is it relevant to "female ruler"?
i'm still learning chinese as of now and unfortunately have not learnt that word yet, sorry for my inability to answer

Yes!! It means Empress/"Maternal national leader".
媓 will be utilized in my Xiangqi variant.

Now, you've indicated early that you don't think so but aren't sure, as far as "Pheonix" is concerned. If anything, maybe I should simply use it, and players seeing 媓 (White's army's Queen) will somehow associate the emblematic symbol with the Queen (Black's army). What do you think? Do you feel it would work?

Haha Thanks, MISTER_McCHESS. I wasn't sure either, but it turns out that it means Empress/female-ruler; in olden times. (Since Chess is a game that dates back, I thought it appropriate. 
)
Great to revisit this pleasant thread. It was this that gave rise to the game we're testrunning.

um, one thing is, in Chinese, we just put the Queen as 后 as the same as in chess.
Chess terms:
King王
Queen后
Pawn兵
rook车
knight马
cannon炮
Phoenix凤凰but you can use both凤and凰to express the meanings.

btw, I can only help you with Simplified Chinese since I can't really do the old version
one thing. I recommend changing the 玛（Mammoth）into 猛 or 象since 玛naturally doesn't have anything to do with an animal.
another thing. 蛇 snake is definitely NOT 它. 它means "it"
final thing. 山 is definitely not the immortal priest either. it means mountain

That's Japanese lol. In Chinese King and Jade are not interchangeable. However in Shogi it is; If you want to interchange 王 I would recommend 帅, meaning Senior General and/or Admiral.
