Backgammon

I know many chess players also play backgammon.  From what I understand, the late Walter Browne was one of them.  (He played Scrabble too.)

I too enjoy backgammon.  Just for fun, I thought I would show off a few of my backgammon sets.

Here's a photo of my backgammon books.  I have about 80 different titles.  This photo is not quite current, but it does show most of the titles.

Very nice! It's been a very long time since I've played, but I enjoyed it immensely when I did.

I played a bit of backgammon in college. I'm pretty sure that no one in my dorm had any real skill.

Those are nice sets.

I have been meaning to give backgammon a real try for a while, but dont seam to find the time. Im probably to old and preoccupied with pet interests like chess to find room for a new one.

A quote I came across recently, that I like:

Backgammon: the right balance between a board game where there’s real skill in maneuvering the pieces - which of course it has in common with chess - and a gambling game like poker, where you’re betting on probabilistic outcomes.  It’s a very nice merger of the two.

Gorgeous sets, Ed!

I haven't played backgammon since college in the early 1980s, but you are tempting me with these beautiful sets.

They're expensive too.  Several hundreds of dollars, minimum, for each of these last few sets I posted.  Check out Gammon Village to see lots more beautiful sets, many of them costing thousands of dollars.

I've still been doing little else this past half a year or so, other than playing backgammon.  I'm addicted.  (Again.  The backgammon bug has bitten me before.)  I've been entering tourneys, participating in a weekly club, playing online, reading my books, playing against eXtreme Gammon and GNU, watching backgammon videos and lectures online, attempting to get my PR (Peformance Rating, also called an Error Rate) down to as low as possible, etc. Been having lots of fun.

I still need a long break from chess and backgammon has provided me with another outlet.  I still can't believe how deep this game actually is.
