The explosion was heard in Fiji, 800 kilometers away.
New Zealand (2,300 kilometers away) has been placed on Tsunami Alert.
There are no reports of fatalities so far... but the information is still very fragmentary.

There have been reports from New Zealand's North Island (two thousand three hundred kilometers from Tonga) that the explosion has been heard, sounding like a series of sonic booms.
Wow, that looks horrifying.
