Because pulp if you as I do subscribe to the idea that all thought feeling and behaviour is an inevitable result of evolution/causality, then you have to redefine your view of what consciousness is.
Mmm, not exactly. My nose for example is only mine, for the moment.

Makes me wonder what actually exists. For example the experience of a sunset being beautiful clearly does exist. Though it's true a sunset is nothing but vibrating energy.
My Own 'world view', teaches, that, More than a few of us, are mainly, if Not, Totally, focused, on the 'creation', if-you-will.. Like, saying the 'sun' for instance, {one of many 'trillions', known as 'stars', obviously}, "though beautiful.. Is nothing, but vibrating energy"..{sound, familiar?}.
Yet, becoming, Overlooked, in this process; Is the 'Guiding, sentient Force'.. that, the 'humanists' among us, describe, as, {merely -> implied}, 'Gravity'.. Or, in the case, of Every 'atom' mysteriously, holding itself together, {and, Not 'flying apart'}.. as, No more <-{once again, implied}, than, the 'weak- nuclear- force'.
All, very nice, synthesized, & compact, if you will.. But, Still, failing to address, how those 'things'..{including us}, Got, to be that way !? .. Furthermore .. As if, to confirm, their ignorance.. Any, mention, of a Super- sentient 'Force', behind, the Creation, that surrounds us.. Is often called, by those same 'enlightened' observers; As, 'Superstition.'
.. From, this background.. Is it Any wonder, why, the 'Powers-that-Be', have chosen, 'Faith' as the 'Bridge' in addressing, that .. More Fully, Comprehending, 'Gap'!? o: .. {rhetorical}.

Like sure I get that there are thoughts feelings and behaviours as well as physical properties I could describe as Tom.
But I accept that nothing belongs to me. That essentially there is no I. It's just an interconnected pattern.

I'll answer Ed! Well baby nature is complex and you won't ever absolutely understand it. None of us ever will.
I suppose some of us will react to that reality by trying to fill in the gaps and some of us will accept there is a natural explanation that we don't happen to know.
Stephen Hawking takes neither of those paths. He accepts nature holds the answers but he wants to find a grand theory of everything. I admire that very much.

But then as much as I accept all is natural I absolutely identify with the wonderful mother Teresa quote that talked about experiencing pure love in that silence. I couldn't more.
