How to play chess
The Easy way
For Beginners
For You
And for your opponent
Chess is a game played by two people. Each person has an army to use. The army’s are called White and Black but they don’t need to be White and Black as long as they are two different colors one light and the other dark. The game is played on the chessboard. Which has 64 squares. The rows across are called ranks and the ones that go up and down are called files. The players take turns and white goes first
Each army includes two rooks, two knights, two bishops, one king, one queen, and eight pawns.
the rooks
move to
Rooks work best in the endgame but don’t move them too soon
Rooks capture pieces by landing on the square the piece rests on
Rook positions
Knights
Knights stand next to the rooks Beside the corners
Knights jump over other pieces
Knights capture in the same way they move
That is a knight from a fancy glass chess set
Knights move L-shaped
How they move is on the next page
See how it’s L-shaped. two squares down and one to the side or two squares two the side and one up or down
in the diagram above the white knight started on the square next to the rook and moved to the square it is on. Despite the pawn. That is called Jumping.
Fun Facts
knights are the only piece
that can jump
Hop hop hop
bishops
Bishops go next to the knights
They move diagonally
That is a black bishop moving
It also shows how the bishop captures
The same way they move.
You know all about bishops
the king
kings move one square in any direction
the king is next to the bishop on the right side
The king must get safe
The is your most important piece
The king can castle
kings can NOT be captured
when the king is attacked it is called check
the 3 ways out of check
block blocking the check
capturing the checking piece
moving out the way
when the king cannot escape check it is called checkmate
the game is over
the checkmated king loses
in the diagram above the black king is in check
black cannot capture the rooks
black cannot block the check
black cannot move
It is checkmate and white wins
when a king is Not in check cannot move and has no other pieces in the same army that can move legally it is called Stalemate
The game is a draw
Nobody wins
Nobody loses
the queen
the queen can go as far as she likes in any direction
as long as she is not blocked
queens capture the same way they move
do not move the queen out to soon she will get chased away by weaker pieces
now look below
NEXT PAGE
The arrows show the queens move. She is checking the black king. he has to move. That is called a skewer.
We are not done yet there is more to learn
the fearsome fork
When one piece attacks two pieces it is called a fork
the knight is the best forker
The black king has to move and white can capture the black queen next move
More forks if you fork the king queen and rook is is called a family fork
Knights are not the only piece that can fork
all pieces can fork
the devious discovery
when one piece would attack an enemy piece but there own friend is in the way the friend can move. That is called a discovery.
in the diagram above the arrows show a devious discovered attack
more
chess
the piercing pin
a pin is the opposite of a skewer
A pin is where one piece attacks an enemy piece and that enemy piece can’t move because if it does a bigger piece will be captured or the king will be put in check
Let me show you what I mean
in the diagram above the arrows show the pin
The knight is pinned to the rook
NEXT
Pawns
pawns go one square forward
but on their first move they can go 2 spaces forward
Pawns capture one square diagonally up
When an enemy pawn goes forward 2 spaces beside your pawn you have 1 chance to capture it as if it moved one
when a pawn reaches the other side of the board it can become any other piece. NOT the king.
piece value
pawn 1 point
knight 3 point
bishop 3 point
rook 5 point
queen 9 point
king the game
