It's believed that physical condition is a very important part of OTB chess, especially after Botvinnik, all super GMs were having serious physical training as a part of their preparations.
Brain And Body Training Systems
Brainage is a waste of time as far as I know.
It is still very early to make a conclusion, but the only brain training method that I have seen research on as effective is the Dual N-Back task (increase in IQ... more efficient multi-tasking...improved attention...not to mention the task's main purpose... increasing working memory capacity which is great for our favorite game). Lot's of great info at this google forum:

Click view all under the files category and you can read pretty much any study that has been done on the DNB task and relevant studies on cognition. There are loads of interesting forum threads there as well.
As for physical fitness... YES! Definitely get in at least some running every day! Take a look at the study posted on that forum there titled:
aerobic exercise enhances cognitive flexibility
It shows significant increases in many areas of cognition.

For the new year I have started training with three different sytems. I am
using Nintendo Brainage, Lumosity, and Wii Fit Plus.
I have really noticed a change in my physical and mental abilities in the last few years, so I would like to see if I can indeed improve them with training.
All three systems are a lot of fun as well, so if I don't get results at least I will
have a good time trying.
Do you all believe in the concept of brain and body training? Do you use
any of these systems? Do you believe any of these systems can improve your
chess rating?
