The Yanny/Laurel phenomenon looks like an example of a verbal transformation in the psychology of auditory perception.

I was a research assistant in an auditory perception lab in college.

Research subjects would hear repetitions of pairs of words like “ flame/blame”.

After hearing this repeated for a few minutes, they would often report the words would change, sometimes into phrases.

It was around the time The Two Towers was at the cinema. One student reported hearing in flame/blame,

”Good Sméagol always helps”.

The academic thinking was that similar to how rods and cones in your eyes can become exhausted and convey an afterimage when staring at a color inverted picture for a long time, neurotransmitters in the auditory can become exhausted when receiving the same sounds repeated over and over, causing perceptual distortion.

The frequencies of the sound sound very similar to both words if you pull up visuals. It doesn't completely sound like either because of the voice being a computer,not a human.

Now,certain frequencies can and can't be processed by different people for certain reasons. One of these reasons is because as we get older,we lose some of the cells in our ears that grow the hairs inside of them. These hair cells can't regernate and we lose the ability to hear higher frequencies.

Additonally,the fact that you only get to pick between yanny and laurel narrows it down a lot. Play the audio to someone who's never heard of the yanny/laurel and ask them what it sounds like,repeat but with the two options of yanny and laurel.

Intrestingly,Japanese people tended to believe it was yanny more often when compared to,say,Western people. This is because the Japansese language lacks certain letters,such as r and l.

You’re being self deprecating. The points you made are all valid and interesting. 

If the sound was perceived to change after hearing it numerous time, that would be more likely to be a verbal transformation. But that doesn’t account for the sound first heard.

The “Green Needle” phrase was surprising. That’s whet I heard. Brainstorm doesn’t even have the same number of syllables so it’s hard to figure ho anyone would hear that. Which phrase did you hear?
